Headed down south with MWMules and a couple of other friends.
We worked on the truck for a few hours, no luck getting it to crank over. Batteries are good. Engine still has nice green coolant. We tried to use a cheater pipe and a socket to turn the crankshaft over...no luck.
Next...
I had a chance to swing by the truck on the way home from Tulsa...flipped on the battery switch...tried to start it and it just clicked. It clicked with authority...but it wouldn't crank over.
It's gonna be Tuesday before I have another chance to get down there with some tools. I'm hoping a...
I should add...truck performed flawlessly on 2 45 mile trips on Monday to/from Kaufmann Stadium. No issues. Heater was working that AM and the temp of the motor never got above about 165 on that trip. It was rainy/wet.
I drove the truck to work on Thursday...18 miles in and 18 back. No issues.
Oil was black. Not milky.
No oil in coolant either. Coolant was greenish/orange.
I could see fuel in the clear tube from the primer pump to the injector pump.
I was taking my M923A1 to the barn this afternoon when the truck began to lose power and eventually died on me. The engine hot light was illuminated but the temp gauge only showed 190. After waiting about 10-12 minutes, it started back up. About 1 mile from my destination, same thing happened...
I've decided to add a solar battery tender to my M923A1 and I just ordered one from that auction website.
I was wondering where most of you have decided to mount the solar panel and the control box?
Thanks!
We all know how hard it can be to find some of the metal cargo bows for the M923/M35 family of trucks. I'm still in search of 5 good metal bows myself and I have a line on getting some. That being said, I decided to use my noggin and put all that 'worthless' knowledge accumulated working in a...
I received my new muffler this afternoon and was able to install it on my truck about 2 hours after UPS dropped it off. Quick picture as the sun was setting on me while we got the tools put away.
Next order of business is hooking up the slave cables to the batteries and figuring out why the...
I just removed a bad muffler in preparation for the new one that arrives on Monday.
I also fixed the hood bolt that had worked its way loose from the hood.

I blew the bottom of my muffler out of my M923A1 this weekend after the local St. Patrick's Day parade. Good news...truck is real loud now. Bad news is...truck is REAL loud now!
I figure all of the years it spent sitting idle in a yard and the rain just running down the pipe finally caught up...
If this is gonna be your first truck...I'd suggest getting one that runs. The GovPlanet descriptions are pretty good, and the guys at Ft Riley are real decent. If they say the truck won't start, it won't start. That being said. I've had my first truck for 2 weeks...already need a new...
Thanks for the very timely thread. After a run in the local St Patrick's Day Parade...the bottom of my muffler blew out on the way home. My M923A1 was loud before...but it's real loud now!
I'll be getting a new muffler soon...and from the sounds of this thread...some gaskets too!

The NHC/Cummins 250 motor is called a Cummins 855 in the civilian market. It's a 855 cubic inch or 14.0 liter motor. It's almost as common as a Chevy big block 350. It's had lots of uses in the civilian market from trucking to farming. It's a good solid motor with a heck of a lot of torque...
