I would check how much air PSI you building to if over 120 to 125 you are building to much air ( If its the high PSI pop off). Your air dryer can sound like that too but lower noise level if the air dryer purge valve is not working.

Looks like to me the pitting was almost a leak and might have been burning a little. Most of the time it is the extra heat from the piston melting to the liner that really cooks the o-rings good and coolant in the oil pan.

Sure you can pull the valve body while in the truck. I have done that in one commercial truck several times trying to get the trim set correctly. been a while back though. you will want to loosen all the bolts and let some of the fluid that in trans drain out because if I remember correctly...
