Changing sock seems easiest by removing bed. Had mine on and off in less than 8 hours. Helps to have a forklift. Look at pics, no wonder it wouldn't run right!

Note the brown dump might have been a CUCV or has a CUCV...
I've got an 86 diesel Dump, (ex US Army fire truck) and an 83 ex Penn Dot gas dually plow truck. the gas truck has much better pulling power but the dump gets better mpg. Anyway snatch up that dump, they are hard to find in good condition here in the rust belt that vintage.

Went to change starters on the M1028a1 today. Found it was missing the bracket. Upon further inspection it COULDN'T have had a bracket as there is no embossing in the block above the freeze plug like there should be. Have had about 20 CUCVs and have 2 engines in the garage and they've all had or...
Don't forget to check the exhaust. I had one that I thought needed an injector pump (would only run on idle) and here the only problem was a clogged muffler. Replaced it and what a difference. You never know.
