Steel Soldiers MV of the month 2020 - April VOTE HERE

Right now the plan is just to make this truck mechanically sound and preserve it in its current state. I have another Federal C2 complete with the boom and a much better cab that I plan to do a full restoration on.

    1944 Federal 606 C2 Wrecker

I made a video of a ride around the block in the big Federal. The transmission is a 5 speed with overdrive on top. We start out in 2nd and get to 5th pretty quick, as the rear ends are 10:22 to 1. It will pull 10 mph in 4th gear easily, so no need to downshift below 4th. Even in OD I don't...

Steel Soldiers MV of the month 2020 - April VOTE HERE

There are only a few days left and voting is extremely close, which is not surprising with so many excellent candidates. Not matter who wins this has been pretty fun. Thanks very much to everyone who has voted for the Federal so far. I made a video of a ride around the block in the big...

    1944 Federal 606 C2 Wrecker

I had to remove the "grafitti". It said "Farm Use".

Steel Soldiers MV of the month 2020 - April VOTE HERE

There sure are a lot of cool vehicles (and trailers !) up for the prize this month. I can see a lot of hard work has been put into them. Here is a little information about my 1943 Federal 7-1/2 ton 606, a former Army Air Force C2 wrecker. Unfortunately the Gar Wood US6 wrecker boom was removed...

    1944 Federal 606 C2 Wrecker

I have one. It took forever to get it but that was mostly due to the state messing up the title.

I put the Federal up for MV of the Month. People are already lining up to vote ! Just kidding, but you can vote at this link if you like. https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/steel-soldiers-mv-of-the-month-2020-april-vote-here.195477/

MV of the Month April 2020

Someone suggested to me I should submit my 1943 Federal 606, a former C2 7-1/2 ton Army Air Force wrecker before the boom was removed. In addition to the normal electric starter it is also equipped with a hand crank inertia starter.

    1968 Mack M123A1C 10 ton Tank Transporter

Thanks, I saw your PM. We were able to find a 5th wheel and ramps last November. What we really need now are some winch parts. I realized last month that we were missing more parts off of our winch than just the spare tire carrier and derrick. We are also missing two of the pulley assemblies. So...

    New to me WC63

I used KBS Tank Sealer on the 55 gallon tank on my Federal. It is a 3 stage process as you have to clean and etch before applying the sealer. I'm very happy with the results. https://kbs.justoldtrucks.com/gold-standard-tank-sealer/ I described the process here...

    1944 Federal 606 C2 Wrecker

Drove to a local car show last Sunday, won "Best Rat Rod", go figure lol. I didn't see any rat rods there. But they were pretty impressed with the truck and especially the inertia starter so they wanted me to get a prize. People really love this truck. Plans are to bring it to the Vintage...

Ross, that is an M123 winch. Where is it located ? Do you have a link ?

    1968 Mack M123A1C 10 ton Tank Transporter

Fasttruck, I think I talked to Memphis and they said they scrapped all the M123 winches they had. Al, I just saw your post. I'll be giving you a call.

The 10 tons get in your blood I guess. Is that a Cummins or LeRoi you are working on ?

    1968 Mack M123A1C 10 ton Tank Transporter

Thanks fasttruck for the photos. That spare tire carrier is a pretty substantial structure we are missing. I think if we have to fabricate it we will need some photos of one with the spare tire removed. I'm still hoping to find an old single winch hulk we can cut one off of and weld it onto...

    1944 Federal 606 C2 Wrecker

More recently I replaced the front driveshaft yoke seal in the transfer case. This seal is one of the low points in the transfer case and when it is leaking you lose most of the oil too. It turns out the seal is the same part number as the same seal in the M series 5 ton military trucks, so the...

    1944 Federal 606 C2 Wrecker

It's been a few months since we have had an update, and I have gotten a good bit of work done. Since my goal is to get the red Matt's Garage Federal road worthy, there were several things that needed to be done. First we would need some lights. The headlights worked, but not both at the same...

    1968 Mack M123A1C 10 ton Tank Transporter

Thanks for all the nice comments, and the photos from fasttruck as well. We work on this truck in fits and spurts as I'm in Florida and Ken and the truck are in Connecticut. Fortunately we have some very talented guys helping us when we are able to work on it, which allows us to get a lot done...
