re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

In "general", when it comes to diesel generators, you want to size the generator to be 50-80% of expected average load. This is just a ballpark estimate and does not take into account motor starting surges and other factors. There is a science to spec'ing out generator sizes. The problem with...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

The Zig Zag configuration is considered "balanced" if that is what you are worried about. The only long term issue I see is of running the gen under too light of a load- which will eventually cause wet stacking. Diesel gens run ideally at 80% or more for best efficiency. The point at which wet...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

I know that you can setup the MEP-005 and MEP-006 to single phase 120/240. I did this with my MEP-005 as a test and it worked for me. I don't know if the MEP-004 has the same generator head. I had posted a link to this page some time ago, it may help you: Re-wiring a three phase generator |...

Convenience Outlets Calling all Electrical Experts for Opinions

The Silver screw is the NEMA standard for the Neutral wire. But take a look at this: http://images2.cableorganizer.com/leviton/gfci/spec-info-sheet-7899.pdf

Convenience Outlets Calling all Electrical Experts for Opinions

The 30 amp plug is a NEMA L14-30R and the 120V outlets are NEMA 5-20R. Replace the R with a P to get the matching plug part number.

Convenience Outlets Calling all Electrical Experts for Opinions

It could be the way the colors show on my screen- It looks to me that Red it the neutral. The neutral on your 120VAC outlets is the side with the extra horizontal slot. The Blue and White appear to be the Hot wires. They way they ran the hot wires through the breaker is telling me that they...

Wondering if I have low compression in 003

Bad connections typically have higher resistances's. Try thinking about watts, you get heat generated when you have a bad connection. To keep it simple the DC equations for watts: W = V x I or W = I2 x R or W = V2 / R. If Crawdaddy is only using 1 12v battery, it would probably toast his...

"Universal" Wiring for MEP002 and 003

I would like to see some real world examples of the voltage going so high that the windings are damaged. It takes a lot to cause this to happen- any appliances would fry before the voltage gets so high the insulation is damaged. I believe on these generators the insulation is rated for 600V. If...

Need a standby genset what to buy ?

Also- is this a generator that will be automatically started and loaded up or all manual? If your significant other will need to be able to bring the generator online and they are not trained and comfortable with generator operations.......you may not want a military generator.

"Universal" Wiring for MEP002 and 003

Are you going to be running this in a 24/7 full time operation? If so, then you want to balance the loads as "best possible". As long as you are not overloading a particular phase, I don't see any problems with temporary operation like this. I have seen many 3-phase generators running a load on...

Phase Angle Meter (Power Factor Measurement)

The most important thing to monitor is AMPS on all non prime power generators. The pf is just a way of seeing how far the current is lagging or leading the voltage. As long as your are operating within the rated amps of the generator- the pf means nothing when looking at capacity. Don't make...

Phase Angle Meter (Power Factor Measurement)

You don't use these power factor meters to sync generators. You use sync scopes or lights!

Phase Angle Meter (Power Factor Measurement)

Exactly as Mike said- single or 3 phase has no relationship to power factor.

Phase Angle Meter (Power Factor Measurement)

I have seen and used them on the military gens that are 750KW and up. I don't really see a need for one on the smaller gens because it probably isn't cost effective to correct the power factor at low loads.

    Crew Cab Pick up?

To get a key made- go to your local Chevy dealer and they will cut a new one for about $10 or so, they did for me when I bought mine without a key. They can look up the key code from the VIN number. You will need proof of ownership.

MEP-016B 3 Phase Generator and Loading

My opinion is that you can overload the generator for a short time with no issues. Many commercial grade gens will run at 120% nameplate for an hour if it is rated as prime power, not if rated as standby. You should limit the load for normal operation to it's nameplate rating and take into...

    Very nice setup!

    mep 003a

Spedmon- like I said- it should measure almost 0, just as you confirmed. The winding is nothing more than a coil of wire and is a direct short until you induce the current to flow.

    mep 003a

I would think that you should measure almost 0 ohms between any leg and L0 if connected in a Wye configuration. Maybe you could figure out a way to do a load bank run with it.

    Heater Core Shutoff?

Be careful about adding a shut off valve to the heater core if it didn't come with one stock. On many engines the flow to the heater core is required for the thermostat to operate properly. If you really want to stop the heat getting to the heater core a bypass setup would be fine.
