Is a CUCV a good first truck to learn mechanical skills?

You are right on with getting a CUCV for messing with. Replacement parts are almost always available and reasonably priced. Lot of SS members buy and part out so CUCv specific parts come available on this site. Junk yard parts are decreasing because most 80's vehicles are pretty well stripped...

    how to charge a battery

The charging system on the truck is designed to charge each battery independent of the other, if I understand the dual alternators each hooked to a separate battery. It would seem that you would want to mimmick the system. Unhook the batteries and charge each separately. The big question would...

    6.2 performance idea

take the bottom end out put a girdle in it and go to town..... Buy 2 or 3 more for cheap and just get real GOOD at engine swaps, maybe do quick disconnects so its easy and quick.... o.k. seriously, I don't enough about the 6.2 other than what I've read on the site, but they WEREN't designed to...

    Oil Filter Magnet

The oil filter takes care of 10 micron pieces???? I can't see the need for anything smaller being picked up. If you have BIG chunks floating around, that's a completely different issue that I'm not sure a magnet applied anywhere would help.....

    RED diesel fuel?

Big trucks are the Prime target for the DOT/DPS stops. POV's don't burn enough to make that much difference. I think the taxes in TX are 38 cents/gallon. If I FILL mine up from empty, 84 gals. I can potentially save $80+ on a $265 fill up. If I get CAUGHT with dyed fuel in any tanks tied into...

    RED diesel fuel?

Texas passed a "new" law or started enforcing an old one about the "off road only" fuel and it is getting harder to find. Apparently the "new" twist is that you purchase on-road diesel and then file to get taxes returned quarterly or yearly. I don't use enough in the tractor at this time to...

    m1008 increase horsepower

Some have suggested "truning up" the IP a bit....... HOWEVER with added "power" you get higher EGT's VERY BAD if not monitored. If your looking for spinning tires and smoky burnouts...... Sorry WRONG trucks. The CUCV is a VERY strong truck as delivered, you can always "improve" it, but there...
