As was mentioned before the M109 and M185 both have boxes on the back, not a cargo body.
And yes they did make an M109a4. It is the same as the M35a3 but with box attached.

Most everything you asked has been answered before, as for driving between Indiana and California you NEED to look for something more road worthy. Say a used Uhaul. These are not the most comfortable for any major length of time, they are slow going down the highway. No creature comforts.

As for doing the gun truck, I would make it up as one of the deuce versions not base it off of a 5 ton. One of the units that mover on the FOB I lived on in Iraq had an M813 done up as a GT. Kick myself for not getting some pics of it.

I am just glad I don't collect the newer stuff that stands a chance they want collected. Yes I know they can come after what I have but I doubt it will happen.
Told the owner about the site so hopefully he signs up. He told me that truck had rust in the fuel tank so he took it off and cleaned it out. Plus a few other odds and ends so far. Cosmetically nothing a good refreshed paint would not hurt.
