Was looking for a shop in or near Milwaukee to work on M1008; then did it all myself!

Yeah I thought so too. The guy who rebuilt the pump said he turns the fuel up on them. I wonder if that contributed to this. I started it up with just the first 4 injectors changed and it’s still tapping.. gonna take a break and do the rear 4 and try again.

In the process of swapping the injectors. I’ve pulled the front pair on each side so far. Here’s how they’re looking after ~3000 miles.

Yeah I absolutely love this truck, especially after the last 2 months of work I put into it. Even with the tapping sound it didn’t let me down once during that 2200 mile drive. I went through miles of scorching desert where there was no cell service or any other people around for miles. I...

Was looking for a shop in or near Milwaukee to work on M1008; then did it all myself!

Thing that’s crazy is that both trucks run perfectly fine and don’t seem to be suffering any performance issues or anything. The sound is just really annoying and kind of embarrassing because it sounds like the motor is about to throw a rod or something. Here’s a clip of me cruising through...

Was looking for a shop in or near Milwaukee to work on M1008; then did it all myself!

When I put the stethoscope on the IP I didn’t hear any knocking, it was just a smooth whistling sound. I really hope I don’t have to tear that thing out again. I seem to be cursed with this darn tapping issue. My other 1008 does the same exact thing and it also just developed randomly while...

I’ll go over it again and check everything, but I’m going to replace the injectors also just to rule that out. Don’t wanna sound crazy but the injectors on there now were rebuilt with Japanese parts and I kinda had a bad feeling about them from the start. I wanna get that stuff out of the...

The new set I have are rebuilt with USA Bosch nozzles. Hopefully they fix my issue.

Was looking for a shop in or near Milwaukee to work on M1008; then did it all myself!

I’m just gonna let the motor cool down and replace all of the injectors with the new set I have. I poked around the exhaust manifold before messing with the injectors and heard no tapping sounds. What a disaster 😔

I’ve done it all different ways, but right on the fuel lines was where It sounded more pronounced. Right on the injector they all sound similar. No real tapping from the valve covers. I just cracked 2 and 4 and it seems to have become better.. I will just swap those out and see what happens...

Was looking for a shop in or near Milwaukee to work on M1008; then did it all myself!

I have one and I’m poking around with it and I feel like I can almost hear the tapping faintly everywhere, but injectors 2 and 4 kinda stand out. I tried to capture it for you guys by putting the stethoscope on my phone mic. I’ll try cracking them again and see if it makes a difference. I...

I just got done doing that and aside from burning my hand and making a mess there was no change. I will investigate an exhaust leak next. How do you go about doing that?

Was looking for a shop in or near Milwaukee to work on M1008; then did it all myself!

I’m gonna start trying to find the source of the tapping. I’ve been told to crack the injector fuel lines. Am I just loosening them enough for fuel to start leaking out or am I suppose to completely remove them? Thanks

I just made it home. 2177 miles in 36 hours! Truck kicked ass the whole way. Had zero issues besides the annoying tapping sound. I will investigate the tapping after some much needed rest. Thanks everyone

Yeah I just put on some music so I don’t hear it lol. Once I start going highway speed it either disappears or the frequency is so fast on the tapping that it’s no longer perceivable. I got about another 1000ish miles and then I’ll be able to start messing with it and hopefully figure out...

I’m just running rotella 15-40 with a WIX filter. I feel like the problem started after I filled up at a Casey’s truck stop. Their diesel pump was disgusting but I was out in the middle of nowhere. Literally like right after I started it after filling up there all this mess started. Aside...

They didn’t have any m1008s or 1009s, but they had a few of the old dodges. I’m not a big fan of those.

When I added the quart of ATF the tank was almost full. I’ve pretty much burned through it all and the knocking is still happening. Not sure what to do for now. On a side note, I was just passing through Lexington, Nebraska and came up on a military vehicle museum. I pulled in a walked...

I was leaning towards the Mercon V as it’s dextron 3 compatible. The Dex VI stuff is full synthetic

I’ve been adding a little bit of diesel kleen every time I fill up but I will add some ATF. I saw the 2 stroke oils at walmart and thought about how you said it’s a must for weed whackers in an old post I saw while researching 😂
