All those threads are great, I used the stepxstep. Get the new silicone boots and replace both sides at the same time, much simpler than doing one side at a time.

All trucks known so far have a VIN in the format 50xxxx where the last 4 digits were apparently numbered in sequence as the trucks were built. The VIN is stamped in the frame and on the dash data plate. Research so far...
I think you may be inviting an alternator problem doing this. If I remember correctly the switch should be "on" whenever the engine is running. I could be off though.
I can't remember the size but I just bought some off the shelf bolts and nuts. Had to drill the hinge out a little bit but that works great. So far I have done it on 3 trucks with no problems.
Looks like a keeper! Cat supplied both green and yellow engines. When they could they sent yellow as they had to send them out for paint if the Army insisted on green.
A truck that is a few decades old and driven by maybe 50 different twenty year olds is going to have some serious wear and tear. Hope that it all works out for you, OP.
