Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

Looks right to me. Did you account for the freeze plug on the right bank of the block under the data plate.

Will do. Glad to see your rig up and looking good. I'll bet she runs considerably better after that filter change. Don't forget not to run to much tread off my tires..

    New paint project

That's it exactly. I noticed that the heads of the hub covers bolts are painted on those beautiful trucks. What's the story on that. The curator at the museum has the original mil-spec documents for this paint scheme and all stenciling. I didn't see anything like that in the paint TM. Is it just...

    New paint project

That was not the original idea. I was going to try to remove just the latex house paint and go from there. As I'm removing the top coat the other layers seem to be coming up with it. I am also noticing that the "BLUE" is starting to blister off as it drys in the 106 degree heat . I'm afraid that...

You are correct sir. But don't forget the three (6 total) on the intake side of each head.

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

Finding A soldier "B" is a good idea. It does take some finesse. If there is any excessive rust or pitting on the sides of the exhaust manifold mounting tabs you may want to go after it with a wire brush. If you still can't get it to go I would hit the sides of each tab with an angle grinder...

    New paint project

As a lot of you fellas know when I bought my deuce it had been painted a nice Smurf blue. I then decided to try the house paint idea and used the Behar Premium exterior flat paint. I did very little to prep the surface besides a good pressure wash and de-greasing. It looked great for quite some...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

There are 8 freeze plugs per head (16 in all) and a total of 3 separate sizes. I looked forever for the sizes to no avail. It doesn't say in the TM I used 9-2320-209-34-2-1 but I could swear I had it written down around here somewhere. I'll keep looking unless someone else chimes in. If you look...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

I followed the TM and put the intake on first. The trick I learned through trial and error was to install the intake but not tighten it down completely until you have the exhaust manifold mounted up first. (hang them both loosely and work them both on at the same time) Do not try to persuade...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

There was a hairline crack between the exhaust and intake valve on my rear head last cylinder closest to the firewall. It was reparable thankfully. They pulled the valves welded the crack and reseated the valves then pressure tested the head.

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

I took my time and made sure everything was clean, painted, and in good order. I took the time to rent a thread chase and chased everything from the head bolts to the manifold bolts. That project in itself took a day. With all the disassembly, parts cleaning / soaking, old gasket scraping, bolt...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

Tell me about it. I was holding my breath the entire way. Every little squeak or creek she made I was freaking out. I think I spent the whole trip staring at the gauges instead of the road. It's defiantly a testament to the M35 series of trucks and that LDT engine.

sorry it took some time to post the picks and get the job done but here it is. The first four picks are of the break down. It was a one man job and quite simple by following the TM page for page. I have read several threads that debate taking off or leaving the turbo on. I elected to take it...

TX- The Military Heritage museum open house and 1st annual MV rally

m151tx asked me to update everyone on the boys status. I wish I had good news but such is not the case. I didn't get the full story but I did find out that the little man did not make it. He passed on to a better place some time this morning. His parents, Grandparents and entire family thank you...

TX- The Military Heritage museum open house and 1st annual MV rally

The Memorial Day event was indeed a huge success. In a few years I'll bet we give Brent Mullins a run for the money. No offense Brent.. We had a wonderful turn out of visitors. Everybody from local veterans to cub and boy Scout troops. Maybe by next year we will have the museums 4,000 sq.ft...
