I have started replacing my cables the other day and use a combination of crimping and soldering. I've been using a set of $35 10 ton hydraulic wire crimpers from ebay. They seem to work pretty good and have most of the size dies...
Last week I started making new cables for my M1008. I crimp and solder the connections then shrink tube them. I use the cheap crimpers from ebay and they seem to work really good. The lugs are tinned 2/0 and the shrink tube is the type with glue to seal the connection.

Thanks guys. The only thing I dislike about the 18K winch is the cable size, wish I could afford synthetic rope! I need to see if there is a market for the new cable I have maybe I could come up with the rest.
