    Low BOy Id

Could be either the M172 (15 ton) or M172A1 (25 ton). The only difference I can find is the axles, and you can't tell that unless you look at the data plate or look for the "Arsenal Grade Axle" marking on the axles. The landing legs are missing, too. Scrap. Irv

    towing capacity

Would you do it with no insurance? That will be the case if you have an accident. Any insurance company will sing with joy that they don't have to pay out, because you violated the ratings of the truck. Irv

    brakes locking up need help

My mistake. I missed the part about it being 900 series. Yes, those are full air. My comments about the 800 series and the earlier 5 tons might be useful to someone with the earlier trucks. Irv

    brakes locking up need help

Don't be embarrassed about being new to this! We have all been there. I had the same thing happen to me on a M813. The previous post is correct about the problem. There is a little hex head set screw on the back of the airpack, also known as an air assist brake. The pedal pushes on a standard...

    28-37 MHz range, anything?

I used to pick up the drive-up window at Dairy Queen on 35.02 MHz FM. Amazing what you can hear them say when they think you can't hear. 8-) Do a search on google for radio scanner frequencies for your area. They are listed for most everywhere. Don't transmit, though. It's illegal, plus they...

    S250 Shelter heater??

I agree on the Mr. Heater. I have one in my S250 and it works just great. I highly recommend it. If you're camping, you'd have to keep the truck engine running just to power the electric fan part of the diesel heater. The Mr. Heater is very safe and far smaller. Irv

    brakes locked up

That happened to me, too. I took the airpack apart and it was just gummed up. All the seals were fine, so I put it back together after cleaning and it was perfect after that. Now for the field fix: I didn't know it at the time, but the fix for that is to slightly crack open the valve on the...

    5 TON Re-Power ?????

Or, someone thought it would be ok to turbo a 250 when it's really not advisable, according to Cummins Northwest. No piston coolers on a 250. It will probably work fine, all the way up to about half way up that big hill.

    12 volt radios in 24 volt m35a2

Headsets and the laws In Washington State, the regulations say that you cannot wear a headset unless it is required for noise protection. The Deuce qualifies, easily. If you get stopped, point to the yellow "Hearing Protection Required" sticker on the dash, and then hand the guy a copy of the...

    Breaking Down Tires

Improvised tire cage One of the military manuals suggests an improvised tire cage for when you are out in the field. After getting the tire broken down, patched and reassembled, you need to air it up safely. Affix the clamp-on chuck and slide the tire under one of the axles of the truck, so...

Convert to 12 volt or use a power inverter?

A potential problem with changing the deuce to 12v is the wiring. The wires are sized to conduct the current that you expect running 24v lights. If you operate 12 volt lights at the same power level (brightness equivalent), you will need twice the current. Therein lies the rub. The wires will...

Convert to 12 volt or use a power inverter?

12v deuce Get a converter box that takes in 24v and outputs 12v. They are available several places. I recommend Marlin P. Jones and Associates MPJA - Power Supply, Power Supplies, Security Cameras, LCD, Fans, Etc. If you 'cheat' a tap off of the lower of the two batteries, that will work fine...

    Flat tow a M151?

Nice looking setup! I agree that trailering is best for the 151. I have a trailer project in the works. Irv

    Flat tow a M151?

Thanks for the tips. I've towed a few things, including 5 ton 'projects' with no problems. This 151 is motorpoool ready, not a collectible. We're talking about a few dozen miles every once in a long while. Diffs didn't heat up on a 20 mile tow. Just put it in neutral, bungeed the steering wheel...

    Flat tow a M151?

I plan on towing the 151 with a short towbar behind a pickup. The only concern I have is for the differentials heating up or the tranny having a problem. Is there a definite yes or no about flat towing the 151? I'll bungee the steering wheel straight ahead, with some flex for turns. I'll tape a...
