Where is the knock coming from? Front, rear, under your seat - where do you feel it? Does it happen when you accelerate, decelerate, with a load, no load?
Take off the airline from the outside passenger tank that feeds the top of the transmission. Fill it with ATF, reconnect, start truck, let air pressure build, and shift through the gears. Do not move yet. Cut off truck, drain off air from tank. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Run a quart through...
Replace or rebuild your poppet valves. It is on top of the transmission on the passenger side. Remove the floor pan. It is tight and a pain to replace. You can try to remove the airlines and spray in air tool oil first.
Oil and air pressure are fine. I have had issues with the front axle engaging and not for awhile. Tried taking off air supply and adding oil - no result.
In between the two valves where the airlines connect on top of the transmission - there is a female coupler that moves up and down. It looks like there should be a male air line or similar going to it. What does that do?
On the passenger side top of the transmission where the air lines connect to the transfer case - air is blowing out between the the connections where the lines go into the top of the transmission.
Any body know what is wrong?
Cannot operate the truck anymore.
The solenoid connects the heater(s) in the transmission. I need to look in the top of the transmission and see if I can access where the wires connect and see if I have a short/burnt wire.
OK, found shorted wiring for the headlights. Fixed.
The solenoid beside the ether can seems to feed into the transmission, guessing for the heaters/defrosters. This took all day - so that is all I have for now. Anyone who has worked on these CAT transmissions would know.
Help???!!!
All of the sudden when I cut the headlights on, the truck shuts down. It seemed like a short circuit, the volt meter pegs to zero (all the way left). I have spent hours and hours trying to trace the issue.
I discovered that my solenoid has melted (the one by the ether can on the drivers side)...
Bruce,
I sent you a message about the M917.
Any luck with the above thread? I am having issues with my air shift lever/valve on my M916. It has been working intermittently, but lately not at all. I use my 916 to haul my 25 ton excavator off road, so the front axle pulling is vital.

My issue is from the switch to the diaphragm on the transfer case. It worked off and on for awhile, but now not at all. The switch/valve body on the dash feeds air to the diaphragm which engages the front axle. When it works you hear and feel a "thunk".
There is also an air relief valve or...
