    Is the ground shunt needed?

By "polarity box" do you mean the four lug distribution strip that the 12 and 24 positive leads from the battery go to that was also under the spare tire mount/lift?

    Is the ground shunt needed?

Hi all, I have a M1079 and will eventually turn it into a camper. It's become a multi year project now and I'm still not too far along. Long story short... to increase usable space I have removed everything from in between the cab and box. There is a ground shunt that I'm wondering if it's...

Please identify where this is supposed to get reconnected

Thanks TNriverjet and Gimpyrobb. That makes perfect sense. I removed that, so that's why I couldn't find what it attached to. I removed everything between the cab and the shelter. I completely forgot about the ether.

Please identify where this is supposed to get reconnected

I more than likely disconnected this (air line?) and now I don't see where to reconnect it? This is on a 1993 M1079 with a cat 3116 engine. It may be different than the other engines (3126, 3136, A7). As the picture shows, two lines come out the valve cover on the passenger side of engine...

    MRP Wheels on the LMTV

Salvator, Can't you just remove the correct hardware from the steel wheel or aluminum to thick to use it? Where did you get the longer lug studs from?

I would very much prefer 12V to the 24V, Can it be switched?

Keith_J, I would keep the driving/starting batteries separate from the living space. Maintaining four batteries for starting/driving in my opinion is wasteful and unnecessarily complicated and expensive. If one battery develops a problem it can degrade the other three. If everything is 12v...

I would very much prefer 12V to the 24V, Can it be switched?

Thanks suprman, I'll definitely look into it. Seems like a good "end around" if needed. Hopefully the transmission is 12v.

unidentified item in Battery box "What is it?"

FloridaAKM, I'll be attaching a pmw solar charger soon with large enough panel(s) to do the job. Two tiny beer coaster sized panels... laugh, grumble, laugh, grumble... Whats the point. I still need to decide if it's worth the effort to go all 12v or keep the 24v.

unidentified item in Battery box "What is it?"

Thanks guys, There are two tiny solar panels, maybe 3"x3", each ran to some sort of charge controller. They were disconnected prior to my picking up the truck. Fastsailor, I searched for battery tester and came up with nothing, page 214 of my manual was van body area, we have different...

I would very much prefer 12V to the 24V, Can it be switched?

The lights are already 12V. The alternator already puts out 14v and 28v. Fooling the exiter relay just to engage the alternator may be a thing. Caterpiller engines are not exactly uncommon so finding a 12v starter that'll fit shouldn't be that hard. The real question is the electric...

unidentified item in Battery box "What is it?"

Inside the battery box there is this unidentified item. Its wired 24V, rests in the battery hold down tray thing, has a led on it and has a coilled cord. Its cylindrical about 4 inches long. What is it? is it important/needed?

    Hub and Differential plug sizes

Hi all, I'm going to pick up a M1079 soon, before I drive it I want to check the hubs and differentials for oil. I will check many other things as well. Would one of you tell me the correct size plug sockets to bring? I assume two different sizes.

Ft Lewis-McChord M1079 inspection training advice

Shark Bait, I sent him a pm. I've already sent wrenches, pliers, multimeter, sockets, allen wrenches and batteries to my sister. I want to do or have done a complete Fluid and filter change someplace in or near Seattle. My sister lives in an apartment so most likely I won't get to play...

Ft Lewis-McChord M1079 inspection training advice

Doug Roberts, I'll definitely look into the differentials, I've purchased and sent two optimas to my sister's place, with any luck they will be there in time. Does anybody know if everything is metric, or SAE on this truck or is it a good deal of both like everything else. It sure would be...

Ft Lewis-McChord M1079 inspection training advice

Tractors0130, Thanks, I have all the TM's and will review and might print some pages as well as the electric copy. I'll install two civi batteries ASAP. Are the battery clamps common sized? Do I need to change them as well? Any Suggestions on Battery type/brand/size?
