MEP-803a, runs, but a couple quirks

I honestly think converting the volt and load gauges to digital as I and others have done is very worthwhile. After conversion and verification it keeps from having to connect test instruments. My unit had a new oil pressure gauge installed. I haven't verified it's reading but I feel it is...

    Connecting autostart controllers 802A / 803A and 831A

I toyed with the idea but decided it didn't make sense for me. Unless you have a genset that can operate the total load without doing some load management I don't see it as useful. My home is on a 200 amp panel and requires load management for my 803A. Now if I had a 40KW unit I would be all...

    Ground Bonding

I shouldn't need to disconnect my ground rod at the generator when I remove the bonding strap should I? I have a copper rod tied to the ground terminal.

    Ground Bonding

My load bank does use a 120v fan. I guess I will try to remember to put it back on for testing and remove it after so I don't forget.

    Ground Bonding

Been reading up on the ground bonding question. Just wanting to create a thread with this title as opposed to the info being buried in other subjects. The best I can understand is when I have my generator connected to my house which has the ground and neutral bonded in the panel I should remove...

    New member and a new-to-me MEP-803a

I need to research that. I didn't find a clear answer on this in the TM. My home panel has the bonding screws in place. Right or wrong I didn't remove the strap on the generator and it worked fine.

Might not hurt to pick up some Stanadyne Lubricity Formula to add to the fuel.

One black, one white, and one ground is typical for 120v single phase. Without seeing the heater and diagram in person it would be difficult to advise how to connect it. I imagine if you make the single phase connection on the heater you would set the generator to run 240v single phase. It...

    My MEP-803A

Ran mine for 4 hours straight. Not sure how long the power was actually out but wanted t give it a good run while I had it going. Just filled my 55 gallon drums with diesel today. They still had some people out of power this morning according to Talquin...

Genset Conversion From 3 Phase to Single Phase

Some discussion on this here. And here.

    24v charging thru slave port

My 803 came with the 24VPSC 735x640 installed. Most of the units on the lot had them. Mine will see very little direct sun because I placed it under a shed but the sun will peak in at certain times of the day. I have solar panels connected to almost everything I have that may sit a while and...

First power outage with the MEP803A

LOL the utility coop automated call came at 6 am this morning. On top of that it had a long delay before automaman started to speak so I hung up the first time and my phone cut the call the second time. Third call back I realized it wasn't going to stop until I responded. Glad didn't rely on...

First power outage with the MEP803A

I'm surprised my chance came this soon. All went well except the utility company did not call when power was restored. That may happen with some delay. Had to go up the road to see if neighbors had lights. I was a bit conservative and turned the AC off before running the hot water heater. Max...

First power outage with the MEP803A

Running lights, refrigerator, 3-1/2 ton AC and only pulling 13 amps. Voltage holding steady on both legs. Wasn't looking at the meters when the AC cut on so I don't know how high it spiked. Heard the gen grunt for less than a second.

Quick and legal way to connect generator to home

What you have is a bad main breaker if it doesn't open when turned off. I just heard of this happening at someone's house the other day. It's best if you use an interlock to test your main while the house HAS power and make sure it is working correctly.

    Generator - Can you Identify?

Curiosity got me looking through some of the info on this shelter but the literature just says generation as supplied by user so it doesn't specify a particular generator. They have a 248 page TM on the shelter here under the related media tab. http://www.gichner.us/s-788.html

Quick and legal way to connect generator to home

Square D makes breaker interlock kits to fit their panels. These allow you to back feed higher amp loads and protect from doing so unless the main is turned off. Breaker-Load-Centers-QOCGK2C/203046553

I agree with jamawieb. You might want to take it easy if the unit has a new engine to break in. My load meter read high as well. On top of that neither the voltage or hertz meters worked. You might be interested in changing them out for digitals like I did...

    My MEP-803A

Looks like I'm about to write the final chapter on this project. I tried tightening some connections to cure the voltage drop and didn't have any results doing that. Sooooooooo I started taking connectors off, sanding, deoxidizing, and recrimping. I also sprayed some deoxidizer in the phase...

    My MEP-803A

I completed the digital meter install but I still have to troubleshoot the voltage drop on L1. Overall I am pleased with the digital meters. I have always prided myself in figuring out the easiest way to do most things I attempted but as I age I seem to have more do overs and after thoughts when...
