VDO Meter Attached to Steering on 404 Unimog?

No, not illuminated. The paint might be the 'glow' type but I never noticed if it is. This device is handy for such times as being towed out of a mud hole, along a slick road, in snow, etc. Sure beats having to open the door and look at the tire. How many times have you seen someone being...

VDO Meter Attached to Steering on 404 Unimog?

It indicates which way the steering tires are pointed.

    M1078 fmtv ctis

The gauges for the dry tanks can be misleading because they do not indicate the pressure in the wet tank (where CTIS air comes from). Such conditions as too-low idle, leaks past the Over Pressure Valve (which comes off the wet tank) or a leaking OPV itself can drop wet tank pressure without any...

Performance: 3116 vs 3126 and WTECII vs WTECIII

Performance: 3116 vs 3126 and WTECII vs WTECIII: Does anyone have personal experience driving those combinations, the changes that occurred about 1998? Were there 'crossovers', like 3116 with WTECIII, or 3126 with older WTECII? Did the switch from wired to a solder board PDP (power...

    M923A1 with 4 six volt

Why does everyone always recommend disconnecting the batteries to charge them? That's a lot of effort and not necessary. A 12v charger across each of the 12v batteries in turn until they are all charged works fine with no issues with safety. What am I missing?

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

Like MWMULE said, those bulges on the Michelins are 'normal'. I am running tires with those bulges that are 15 years old. The important check is for cracking (weathering) that is deep enough to matter. But, you can't go wrong with new tires, if you can find them.

    PRC 25 T (Tadiran)Buzzing Tone while Transmitting

Charcoal01, you seem to have your PRC-25 working nicely for your purpose now. Neat radios of old technology are fun to play with! Are you familiar with SEM-25 and SEM-35? I have been lucky enough to find those on this side of the pond and enjoy those too. The '25 and '35 also cover down to...

    Who needs interior door handles?

Awesomeness, your original post was clear and to the point, and you got an answer or two. Seems it's too tempting to pull a thread off course, as is happening much too often these days. I don't need handles. Many have been available from scrapped trucks. I just had to ask around to find them.

The front and rear PTOs on the 406/416 run off the transmission. A PTO box on the left of the transmission provides front or rear, or both, shaft engagement at either 540 or 1000 rpm. One model of PTO box is 540 only.

What is the brownish they dip the generator stator In to seal and protect them?

One old 'standard' sealing and stabilizing material was glyptal (glyptol), normally applied with vacuum. Bet that lengthy process is not used much any more. Glyptal is the coating seen inside engines too.

    12v siren on M38A1 24v

Nothing wrong with keeping it simple like you wired it. That switch will handle the load fine. If the siren has 23 amps on data plate then that already includes the start-up spike and the motor probably draws much less while running. The siren can use the chassis ground where it is mounted...

    FLU419 Mogli's first job

    Just 24 volt

Theoretically you could install a Vanner Battery Equalizer across the batteries and then use only a 24 volt alternator connection. The truck wiring would not have to change. Check out the Vanner site if you are not familiar with battery equalizers. http://www.vanner.com/battery-equalizers/

    CTIS Quick release valve

A valve like this (used for "kneeling" the truck) caused me a lot of hair pulling. That tire had a leak that I could not find. It seemed to leak when driving it but usually stopped leaking when stopped. Sometimes it continued leaking and the tire would go down. That heavy valve and it's hose...

Adjusting Load Sensing Valve on M1078

When you said "front brakes were locking" did you mean literally the front brakes on the truck (and not the secondary on the rear brakes) ? Consider this; The front brakes do not have spring brakes to lock up. If the front brakes are locking then it's from application of air pressure, not...

    battery cutoff on negative wire

There's one slight problem with a negative ground disconnect. Of course 12v and 24v pairs of batteries share the ground, but disconnecting the ground still leaves the 12v line and the 24 v lines connected to everything on the truck. That means when you start wrenching on the reverse polarity...
