    1974 Steyr-Puch Haflinger 5-Speed

Randy, the Haflingers are a very capable small truck. I use one a lot on the farm and really enjoy it. Unlike this one you spotted, mine is the USA DOT version and is licensed for highway use. DOT approval required 7" headlights (and other upgrades) giving them a "bug-eyed" appearance, a...

Got my Light Material Handling Crane (LMHC) today!

That is very nice! I know the cable winch is electric, and can see that the 'rotate' is a manual crank, but is the boom lift/lower manual too? Can you reach the 'rotate' crank handle from the ground? I have a jib crane in my LMTV but have to climb in and out of the bed to hook up then operate...

    lmtv air brake leak

Man, you said "loud air leak suddenly coming from a relief valve behind the front air tank", so I'm curious where "behind the front bumper" came from. I am going to assume you meant behind the air tanks. That device behind the wet air tank is an over pressure valve. Is that it in the really...

    FLU419 SEE Wheel Hubs

It is difficult to diagnose wear in a Unimog hub without going inside and looking. Probably the most common failure is spalling in the bottom of the race for the big wheel bearing. One cause scenario is that any small contamination like sand grains or metal flakes tend to settle at the bottom...

Cab Lift Problem and finding Hydraulic Reservoir on 1994 M1078

As Suprman implied, check your fluid level in the reservoir. Going part way up implies the air/hydraulic pump is working and there are no leaks or blockages. The reservoir is small and if not serviced can run out of capacity. After you find the pump located behind the cab (literally a black...

    What trailer is this? Generator?

Rory, that is some good information, thanks! The link that DeadParrot referenced associates the M98400 number as a location code with the Corp so your assumption is probably right-on. The former use of the trailer may not be discovered but now I know more about it's possible history. The...

adding new circuits to the fuse box - how?

Great thread! I will certainly be watching.

    What trailer is this? Generator?

I just got a small trailer that was possibly used for a generator. Does anyone recognize it? There are no data plates. I have searched SS and the web and do not find that small trailer with the details this one has, like the missing corners, no service brakes (has parking brakes), no lights...

    Value estimate on Unimog?

http://www.unimog.net/exchange/ is a real-world list of Unimogs for sale. If you are looking for Unimog prices why would you want to avoid 'those Mercedes types'? Do you have better pictures (not postage stamp size)?

    Fmtv no more dual voltage

Look at their 'equalizer' line, then click on any of the manuals and read the description. http://www.vanner.com/battery-equalizers/ Bob

What to drive on a 18,000 mile trip?

Having traveled with all three of those types vehicles, a modern Diesel, LMTV /M-1078, and Unimog, I would suggest a 'semi-modern' Diesel of a common brand. Why? A common brand of Diesel truck will have the comfort items (heat, AC, cleaner cab, easy ride) that simply is not available in old...

    Fmtv no more dual voltage

Since you have to have two batteries in series, you could go 24v only and power the 12v circuits (as they exist with no conversions) with the two batteries and a Vanner (or similar) battery equalizer. The Vanner would ensure the two batteries were treated equally so there is not the old problem...

    Front Axle Spiders Failing?

Dirk, thank you for sticking around and following through on the cause of the problem for those of us trying to figure it out with you. You didn't just disappear when you found the (slightly embarrassing) cause, as too many do!

saving military communications gear at hamfests

Great haul Mike! With that RAK-8 you can try to receive the yearly test transmission of radio station SAQ, a 17.2 kHz Alexanderson alternator/transmitter in Grimeton, Sweden. I have tried many times to hear it but you might get lucky! Good info here; http://www.vlf.it/parmigiani/saq_eng.htm...

    Military "CB" Radio

The SEM-35 (and SEM-25) are FM radios. CB is AM (or SSB). Otherwise the SEM radios are nice radios and cover 6 meter and 10 meter Amateur bands.

SEE - Cold weather hydralic issues

Suggestions: 1) Perhaps the military has used 15W40 engine oil in your SEE hydraulics. That could especially apply if the SEE is from 'down south'. The trend was to use one 'fluid' for everything, as the FMTV trucks had 15W40 in the automatic transmissions. Synthetic 10W oil or hydraulic...

LMTV Alternator Disaster, engine now catastophic

Yes! I just toasted an engine on a new-to-me LMTV because the slight bouncing in the oil pressure gauge was a loosening sending unit (losing ground) which I missed, and that cost an engine when the sender blew out at speed..

    Oil in exhaust pipe

If it's really oil dripping then suspect oil leak from exhaust side of turbo cartridge. Wet stacking spits fuel.
