My transmission shut down like that once. I found one of the two big plugs on the back/bottom of the key pad was loose. Last soldier to work on it did not tighten the retaining screws.
I had to pull the dash to get to it. The whole assembly was missing mounting screws too.
Timing should be set at idle rpm so there is no advance contribution from the centrifugal spark advance. Then you will see much earlier spark as engine is rev'ed. That's ok. I have seen 30 to 40 deg btdc. You would think the engine would never run with that early timing but it does. It all...
Check for end-play in the throttle shaft through the carb body, the shaft the butterfly plate is on. A little end play allows the oblong plate to hit the bore of the carb early, not closing all the way, so idle stays high. Usually just a little touch will center the plate and it closes. A...
Just about any liquid lubricant can be injected. I have injected motor oil and tractor fluid (hydraulic oil) and all is well. A pump oil can is handy for this job. The lockers operate on full system air pressure so no problem using shop air to engage them.
While you have the tubing...
Basic Unimog maintenance calls for manually injecting anti-corrosive oil into the air lines going to the differential locks. That oil is needed to lube and clean the Pistons and seals of the lockers. Inject oil by removing an air line and squirting in oil. Operate the lockers, then remove...
I do not have an SEE but recall this discussion before, probably on Benzworld Unimogs. As indicated above, when the boom is lifted to the top, with speed, and still has inertia, shove the hydraulic control in the opposite direction. The engine probably has to be rev'ed up to normal operating...
Hi Crunchy,
I do this all the time: stack a layer of cribbage to get at least high enough for a bottle jack to not have to extend much. Don't use much of the 'screw section' for safety. You will be plenty secure with the one good jack under the axle anythere near the wheel.
Yes, the jacked...
Thanks for posting TNriverjet. When I went looking for 6TMF batteries, the NAPA guy thought they could get batteries of same manufacturing date. I had told him not to gather batteries from different places of different ages because it's necessary to have similar batteries in a series-parallel...
My truck did that, bouncing volt meter, voltage steadies with load. That went on for months. Then the truck would not start one day. Batteries were bad, the 12-24 pair, showing high internal resistance. New batteries fixed the voltage fluxuation completely.
There was not sufficient load on...
Edit: I got a closer view to the upper left of the rotor in your reference photo. Is that a loose yellow wire?
No need to replace the Pertronix, IMHO. If the engine runs at all, the Pertronix is functional. Be sure the magnet ring is seated down on the cam of the distributor so the magnets...
If your only need for low profile tires is to drive straight into the garage, how about railroad-gauge wheels, and no tires. Make a 'rail' bed out of end to end 2x4's.
Unimog wheels as used for railroad switchgear are so narrow that they sell cheap.
Seems like a lot of tire changing just to...
I am happy to pass along information gained from guys smarter than me, and lessons learned in the 21 years since I bought my first 404 Unimog. I actually discovered Unimogs in Ecuador in about 1979 and have been intrigued with them ever since.
Before I bought a 404 I volunteered to help a...
Hi Crunchy,
When I said NATO truck it simply meant that it served as part of the NATO participation from that country. What that means (to me anyway) is that the trucks were modified to be equivalent in lighting and interconnections, like trailer plug, with USA trucks. For example, your...
I was reading 'old' threads and notice I never responded. Mike Pop is a good friend and gave me the idea to put an Unimog 404 box on the M-105! One coincidence discovered when mating the box to the trailer was that the mounting centers of the German Radio box flex frames and the widths of the...
Hey Crunchy, you might try one other thing. These switches do not drain well. Over the years they can accumulate dirt, bug parts, rust, and whatever inside the lock. Use a can of WD-40 with the little tube, insert into the hole as far as it will go, displacing the spring cover, and spray the...
I think you are seeing reverse diode voltage. LED's are diodes, typically installed as jumpers across the fuses. Remove the fuse and the led lights IF there is some resistance across the load circuit. When not forward biased (fuse out, no load) they allow a little current to flow into the...
Trailer brake controller. Not all 404's have them, only radio trucks like yours. You probably have the manual brake control handle sticking out on the right side of the steering column too, and an air compressor. When you pull down on that brake lever it's this controller that applies trailer...
