Here's a link with pics to what I wrote up a few years back when I did mine. I was doing so much work to my truck at that time it's hard to recollect exactly what I did in respect to the pump wire, but IIRC, I got some fuel submersible-rated teflon insulated wire, solder-spliced it into the wire...
Another consideration is availability... if we're just looking for straight-weight oil without the "non-detergent" characteristic, that's easy. So's non-detergent oil in lighter viscosities (compressor oils). Seems the manufacturers of heavier weight non-detergents have kinda been phasing out...
From a post I wrote in a similar thread a few years ago...
FWIW, I believe transmissions could possibly have different druthers... The same way one brand-new engine may have more or less blow-by than the next, what works well in one trans may not work as well in another. One trans may have a bit...
I feel your pain... Seems there's been quite a few lube opinion battles here on SS. Some folks swear by the non-detergent straight-weight motor oil, my trans hated it, especially when hot, made it a real PITA to shift. Runs much better with the gear oil in the link below, and it's nice to have...
You're welcome. The brass parts are usually referred to as "rings" but they have a conical braking surface. Whatever the problem ends up being, I hope it's an easy fix :-)
Other thing is, I wonder if the 2-3 synchro could've been put in backwards. The cones are the same size on both ends, and at first glance it looks like it should go in either way, but one side allows the slider teeth to sit proud of the cone when shifted that direction, while the other side...
The shifter moving in 5th is normal, when you put it under load in 5th the shifter tends to move toward the dash, effectively engaging the gear set a little tighter. Davidb56 is right, you need to pull the top cover and see if you can slide that 2-3 synchro in place by hand, and if the synchro...
I've had good luck, and what I believe to be fair pricing, buying XZL's from ebay seller "Feltz Tire", located in Marshfield Wisconsin. Probly oughta check here on SS with member simp5782 also.
Boyce has custom, one piece deuce wheels for under $400, and will quote you for custom sizes - https://www.boyceequipment.com/custom-wheels
Red Barn will also custom make wheels, incl. 22.5", with the 6-hole 2.5 ton rockwell pattern, although they disclaim right-out that the wheels are...
I bookmarked the following thread a long time ago to remind myself not to go down the rabbit hole like this poor guy did...
https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/piston-rings-worn-out-time-for-a-rebuild.139285/
Second sentence of the OP starts out; "I have some blow-by.... " followed by 42 pages...
They tend to be noisy and can be "gassy" too. Sounds fine to me. You hope you didn't melt another piston? what does your EGT read under steady load? Doubt it'd run too well with a ventilated piston, or that you ruined one staying under 1250* Yeah, you've got some significant blow-by... lots of...
1.Make sure the throttle handle is all the way in, and nothing is obstructing the accelerator or throttle cables/linkages
2. Take the truck for a drive and get it up to operating temp
3. Adjust the idle down to 850 (mine seems to vibrate a little less when adjusted a bit above...
Thanks! as far as the time and money goes, it's all relative...
I know nice, stock deuces could be had for a couple grand years ago when the gubment was purging them, and that's where a lot of cost related perception comes from. I've tracked very closely, and I've got about $32k into the truck...
Others may disagree, my opinion is, if it's functioning properly, staying cool, and you're not getting chunkies on the drain plug, consider the noise part of the trans's "charm" :)
My guess is that you have a shift fork dragging a bit on a synchro collar. Seems others have stated the 3053a can be rather noisy (mine is a bit noisy too). Maybe a locating divit/detent in one of the shift shafts isn't exactly drilled where it should be, or one of the dogs on one of the forks...
This is kind of a complex topic... How long you let it sit, and what impact you're willing to accept as a result, is subjective. Keeping batteries charged, and making sure every. single. drop. of fuel in the system is fresh and treated are great things to do. But just because "it fires right up"...
If I let my truck sit for more than a week without driving it, things get real sluggish, there's alot of grumbling, downright tempermental (talking about me of course ;-)
