M4 Sherman being delivered on Monday!

Looks like lots of the expensive, heavy stuff is still there. Much, much better than a lot of range-rescued Shermans I've seen. I'm guessing it's one of the M4A3s that got remanufactured after the war? If it is an M4A3, you're lucky in your choice of prime mover - the Ford GAA looks both...

    DC charging system stator overproducing

Given the small amount of current produced, maybe go to a series regulator instead of a shunt type? It reduces heat production in both the stator and the regulator, and also doesn't mind jump-starting, which I suspect is responsible for frying lots of shunt type regulators. I'm trying to...

INGENUITY! 450 Gallon Canoes (YES, this is an AVIATION THREAD)

A little quick research shows that they're probably wing drop tanks from F105s. I'm happy to see them there - my dad probably wouldn't have made it home if it weren't for all those Wild Weasel missions. And yes, they do look like they make great canoes...

    Giving up on M135.........

Neat. I saw one of those running around at the Louisa county airshow recently, along with some Stearmans and a gorgeous Waco.

New Member/Western North Carolina RE: MEP 003A

The brown residue is usually biological residue from microbes eating the fuel. The little bugs seem to like certain surfaces and environments more than others...

    Correct DUKW Oil Pressure?

This adds some information I didn't have that explains the desirability of full-flow filtration on these engines. Basically, the air filters were untrustworthy and there was a lot of bore and ring material shedding into the oil. I read long ago that a significant amount of wear in most engines...

    where planes go to die

I was curious about the row of missiles. I'm guessing those are the Titan IIs. The B-1B was such a maintenance nightmare that I'm not surprised at all to see it gracing AMARC. Seeng the BUF cut up just made me sad... Nice to see that they're still taking good care of the warthogs. TAC/ACC...

recovery of my new USAF CUCV (sort of) rally mobile

That thing was born to be a great camper. And yes, dig the dirt field + cubs.

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

If the new mag does the trick, then you have a model to time the old mag with. A working spare is always a good thing.

Va Rally at Graves Mountain (Labor Day Weekend) 2013

Why wait until next year? The Blazer made a better wake, but the spray seemed better from the M38. I think the open fenderwells helped with the spray, or at lesat helped get the passengers wetter: I didn't get any pics of JSF01's washdown because I was running his camera. Here are a...

Va Rally at Graves Mountain (Labor Day Weekend) 2013

I managed to get Friday off from work, so should be there tomorrow late AM or so. Will be limping in a leg brace, but will make it.

Bad Military Surplus Generator Advice Online

If you know what a TQG is, then you've seen the GI equivalent: http://www.drs.com/Products/PESG/PDF/TQG3KW.pdf. I've always jonesed after one of these, but they're a little new and pricey. There's also the fact that it's hard to beat an MEP-002A for simple and bulletproof, and I don't know...

    Correct DUKW Oil Pressure?

I don't disagree, but did they compare against a bypass filter with a known rate of flow bypass, and was it apples:apples with respect to rate of flow to gallery, system main gallery pressure, and other variables? I have a feeling (backed by some personal experience) that the oil pumps of the...

Bad Military Surplus Generator Advice Online

True as far as it goes, but you're confusing a generator (which is a device which creates an alternating electric current by means of moving a magnetic field past windings) with a generator, which is a consumer appliance, often in a box, which makes house current when supplied with some fuel...

    World War II Trailer

What an interesting find! I'm glad you're going to restore it - I've never seen one before. What would have towed this originally? It would need a low rear hitch and electric brake controller. The wheels suggest that the trailer was pretty heavy when loaded.

    Dealing with a wreck

    1. Get a lawyer now. Ideally, a pitbull from outside of town, so he doesn't have any reason not to go after somebody 'with connections' locally. 2. Remember that your cost is not the vehicle, but the vehicle plus the years of insurance rate increases you'll eat if you don't beat the declaration...

WWII aircraft food tray galley FTG-3-1

This is neat - I had no idea that any of these survived the great scrapping after WWII. I know the 'oven' was bulkhead-mounted on all the B-52s at the aft end of of 'downstairs.' As big as that warmer is, I'm not sure where it could have gone on a B-17, maybe by the navigator's position...

Picked up my first MEP-002A today

^^What Jimc said. These are military grade continuous-duty diesel gensets. You aren't really blowing the soot out of one until it's under 80% of rated load.

309th Aerospace Maintenance And Regeneration Group

Very cool! My dad had a little to do with certain long-wing B-57s when he was a young LT in TMO at Kirtland. Neat to see that they're still getting it done. Will forward the story on to him.

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

If you can't get it to light with ether or with a shot from the bleed valve, it almost has to be an ignition problem. A lot of them are thermal or vibration intermittent problems.
