    Calling all Generator Owners

Burney - not knowing what you have makes this a little more complicated but generically, your first stop is to get all three TMs for your genset and read through the description and diagnosis parts of the operator's and maintenance manuals. They're freely available as PDFs and include detailed...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

You'd think he'd have seen that in the winter first, though. Did you do long run testing (or long runs) in winter? What kind of vaporizer (if any) does the LP system use?

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

When you say 'gradually slows down' do you mean that it starts sputtering, gets worse and worse, and eventually quits, or more like it is slowly being throttled down? If the former, I'd wonder about a thermal intermittent failure of either the coil or a condenser. If the latter, I'd say you've...

New Guy and a new generator and trailer

The image is tiny, but it should also click to a full size popup for easy viewing in gallery format. If you post 2+ pics you get next/previous buttons in the viewer. Definitely my favorite way to do it. Are you sure the URL attach didn't go to the medium size imageshack link?

Finally - a bar in the deuce cab!

We had an FJ-40V Toyota Land Cruiser years ago, and took it all kinds of places that required grab bars in search of firewood. One of the early mods to it was a grab bar that stuck out far enough that the glove box door would open through it, both because everybody hated climbing in and out of...

New Guy and a new generator and trailer

Well, it's nicer to just upload the pic to the site here so that we can see it without clicking through. If the image is already uploaded somewhere else, you can still use the insert image button on the post editor menu to upload from that URL instead of just putting the URL in the email.

New Guy and a new generator and trailer

And a skid that does, indeed look like one of the Onan-designed MEPs. A fine example of a mil-spec desert tan wing nut, to be sure.

    Dealing with a wreck

If it were a rare or exotic truck you could get it stretched back into shape on a frame machine and have the spring perches rewelded/replaced as necessary. It would be a lot of expense for a CUCV pickup, though. I'm guessing the other vehicle was shredded given how much energy went into...

    Dealing with a wreck

Just another pile-on here. I got rearended when stopped by a relatively low-speed vehicle. It did a fair bit of soft-tissue damage to my neck which didn't fully become apparent for about a week. As badly as your truck was damaged it is very likely that you have a medically reportable level of...

    mep-003a teardown and refurb

Jerry agreeing with me does boost my confidence on the matter some. My MEP-002A is not a toy - it has kept us from renting hotel rooms several times over the last few years during extended outages. I admit to being impressed with the way the thing is put together and how well it does its job...

    mep-003a teardown and refurb

I've bogged mine down (meter above 120% indicated with a mix of reactive and resistive loads). It really doesn't smoke much at all. At about 100% of rated power I start getting thin gray smoke out of it, but it never really smokes like an old Mack truck. I've taken this to mean that the...

    Strange Exhaust Arrangement 003A

I've got a 90 on mine, but then I have a tractor muffler and stack flap on it which seems to do a fine job of keeping the water and wasps out... It does help some with the exhaust noise when the set is working hard, although my non-ASK set is otherwise just as loud as you'd expect.

Am I crazy or what? MEP-002A AUX pump runs all the time

I'm a big believer in battery disconnects. Because the small MEPs vibrate so much, I also like the idea of the batteries not being subjected to the continuous paint shaker when the set is running. Accordingly, I crimped up a set of 6' long battery cables out of a pair of jumper cables and have...

    Rear seat belt options?

This is a pretty common problem we have to deal with in the old car community whether or not it was originally delivered in OD paint. If you look at the attachment points for the seat belt mounting buckles you'll note that they're always backed with a welded heavy plate and nut to prevent...

Scrap it or keep it? 1953 m135

Does stuff from the oil field commonly have 'that special glow'? I know there's some naturally occurring tritium in with the helium, but where else would oil field gear pick up radioisotopes?

    surplus center distribution panel project

I've got one of those. Nice to see somebody putting it to work. Mine's going on the end of a big piece of 8/4 SO to become a contractor box for building my new shed.

    Giving up on M135.........

Easy test: Open the bleed screw on the wheel cylinder while it's stuck locked up and the others are released. If fluid spurts out and then the brake releases, you've found the culprit - it's the wheel cylinder hose acting as a one-way valve. If fluid does not spurt out, then you've got a...

    Entry Level MIG Welder

The gotcha with using CO2 instead of an inert gas is that the carbon in the CO2 can add carbon to the weld. It might just make the weld harder, or it might be brittle.

    Crankcase oil completely consumed MEP004

I didn't ignore them, I considered them and decided they were unlikely to be the cause in this case. 1: it's a diesel - which means that the intake tract pressure is always close to atmospheric (no throttle). Most remarkable cases of oil consumption down valve stems I've seen involved worn...

    MEP-002A hookup through subpanel

This does seem like it would meet the panel interlock requirements for residential code just like the single-panel interlock kits do. Neat idea. Key capture is obviously critical, so the cylinder (actually the bar) has to work the right way.
