The head can be removed with the compressor in place. Back bolts are the worse part of the job. I highly recommend checking the head for warpage and lapping it flat if needed. It took me 2 gasket changes before I figured this out. After fixing the head, mine has been trouble free for over 2 years.
Just remember that you're dealing with thin aluminum, not steel. The most important thing is replacing or tightening ALL of the loose bolts on the compressor/mount and case before anything gets repaired.

This thread is getting derailed big-time. Go back and read Post #4 on page 1. After replacing the speed sensor( post #1, page 1) in the bellhousing and adjusting it properly( post #4, page 1), the truck shifts fine. If I disconnect that sensor, it defaults to 2nd gear; I know that is the right...
Transmission will not shift out of 2nd gear if the sensor is disconnected. It shifted normally after reconnecting it and erasing the 25 11 code. It's not shrapnel from the last one; it won't shift, at least on mine, until it sees a good speed sensor.
