If the front bearing (=> input shaft bearing) is bad, then yes, the whole transmission has to come out.
Before attempting any repairs I may suggest some reading, here: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/upload/M35/TM9-2520-246-34-1.pdf and http://www.steelsoldiers.com/upload/M35/TM9-2520-246-34P.pdf
Joey has worked for me, too. They did a great job, for a very fair rate.
I'm sure there are many more of us, among this long list of happy customers...
... and yet another one, here...
That is not correct. If we were talking about singles, available as mil. surplus tires, the 14.5R20s (365/80R20), which are standard size for the -A3 version, will leave almost 5" of space between tires (2nd pic, below...).
Also, 365/85R20 will work. With about 45" O.D. there still will be...
That should not happen, really... Try balancing these, statically? Here...

Most lifting accessories are way too complicated - and expensive...
All you need is a pair of these hooks:
... and a few feet of 5/16" chain. Then you build this (with- or w/o lifting eye):
Or use a 2"-strap sling, instead.
Make a second one, a bit longer, so you can lift them horizontally...
My words also!
Great write-up; great job, done professionally - and in record time! You are "goodwithsteel", also!:-)
I think I was lucky so far, with the HF54's I got: never had to completely reseal-rebuild one. So now I know who to ask for advice...;-)
