The shop I have used is in Charleston, SC. They have an employee who drives to Shaw AFB where I work several times a week. I took a pump into work, gave it to him, and got it back two days later, $500 even. And that was with a new solenoid and little internal filter.

It would do it if you didn't slowly very gently come to a stop, even in neutral. If you played around with rpm and when you put it into neutral you could 5 out of 10 times keep it running.
A truck I had here was doing that wound up being the torque converter was too slow unlocking. Flushed the transmission, changed the filters, and adjusted the tranmission and throttle cables to spec and it cleared it right up. Are you also sure the fuel filter is good? Sometimes when coming off...
If you aren't going for a gold star restoration, I would say any old light will work. They didn't change a whole lot from year to year. I have seen 50's models on Ebay. Trouble with them is the bakelite handles are not always the best.
It isn't so much of will the truck haul it as will the bed and frame stand up to dumping it. The bed of a cargo deuce is designed to hold a good amount of weight when flat on the frame rails. Once you remove that support it is subject to stresses from many areas no designed for such stess. If I...
