To answer your question Kenny, the rears on a ten ton are Mack SWD321 axles, the front is a FA491 - which is based on the FA49. The rears are a 9.02 ratio. The front carrier has a 3.92 ratio, with further reduction at the knuckles - don't ahve that number handy.
I'm not inclined to...
That is a distinct possibility. Now if I could just find a trailer and a M48 we could find out!
Upshifts aren't bad - the downshifts are tough. The engine and gearbox simply aren't well matched in this regard, which is why the army added the Williams Exhaust Brake to a bunch of them. I've...
As I was sitting here, working on a book - in a truly Warner Brothers moment, the proverbial light bulb went off over my head, and I thought that you had made the above statement.
Unfortunately, your statement above is not accurate. The VT903 and VTA903 are 903 cid engines with a 5.5000 bore...
Yep, the list is long - while on the dash we could consider the two styles of headlight switch - three if you count the push button - and above the dash, different styles of wiper motors, the interior rear view mirror, style of dash board lights.....
it is a very long list indeed.
The Jeep...
I've been assembling a data base to do just that. However, I've been working on this for 3-4 years, and probably have another year to go.
The biggest problem is that there was such a wide interchangeabitlity of parts, and so many were repaired/modified. If they were all kept bone stock it...
Being late on a book deadline, I don't have the time to reread all the posts in this thread, but I thought at one time you mentioned raising the top speed of the truck, supstantially. My stock M123A1C runs 45mph, the same speed as your father's - so lubrication of the rotating portions of the...
Is the truck still at DRMO Chambersburg? Are you picking it up yourself? If so, then go by/call Memphis Equipment's Chambersburg location. I suspect you can get good take off components cheap.
HTH,
David
The M911 also used the 14.00-24 20-ply tire - although a different tread pattern, these should be available reasonably on the surplus market, should you chose to go that route.
A concern would be how many RPMs can the front axle and steering knuckle can stand. The axles under the ten ton are...
I don't think that recently - and I don't have my records in front of me. There was a truck in between the M123A1C and the M911, specifically, the M746. Procurement of the 123 was stopped in favor of the 746. Something like 200 of them were built by Ward LaFrance before the government pulled...
Initial Mack production spanned 1955 through 1957, per Mack. These trucks were gassers, M123, M123C and M123D. In June 1965 Consolidated Diesel Electric was contracted to build 1848 of the ten-ton tractor, now with Cummins V8-300 power. CONDEC was given a second contract in June of 1967, this...
Kyle,
If you are referring to my Standard Catalog of US Military Vehciles, you can get it from me! I have only a few copies left, but they are $25.00 delivered in the US. You can contact me via email at ddoyle9570@aol.com. I am set up with Paypal, but if you prefer another payment method...
No. The article you are referring to by Philip Francis, and is on page 10 of MVM82 seven years ago. He says that the truck had a "903 cid Cummins V-8".
That information is not correct.
Regards,
David Doyle
No, I think someone told you these trucks had a V903 in them, and you believed them. So, I asked two simple, polite questions - and had you taken a few moments to research and find the answers to these questions, you'd have learned some things to consider hard before undertaking the project...
Yes, I've got pix of building the Alcan. Taking a quick look, I see no trailers like yours. Though not in the Alcan file, I've also got photos of a three-wheeled air-driven rock drill. Sort of a drill-press on wheels (wheels like the rear wheel of a bush-hog type of wheel).
HTH,
DD
RE: Re: I
Regarding your plan - please tell us how you intend to power the front axle? Inquiring minds want to know.
Also, please tell us what ten-ton has a 903 Cummins in it? The Cummins under the hood of mine - and every other diesel-powered ten-ton I've seen is a V8-300 of 785 cid...
