Sadly, these cans never seem to get closed right. The bolts and nuts never were tight, or many got lost for some reason. So water is a problem. The SSA's, Supply Support Activities were suposed to do a QAQC on the can before accepting them, but it was rarely done.

Wouldn't it be easier to just take them out and test them on the bench? Apply voltage, watch it work, or not work. Then use a Multi-meter to check if the contacts are properly opening and closing? Pretty standard thing to do when troubleshooting.

If you are going to fix this right, get a new thermostat, gaskets and put them in a box. Find out what else you need and put it all in a box. when its all there and you have time, do. Take the front end off and fix everything at once.
