I agree, I do the same thing, but I use The Right Stuff (impervious to oil/fuel). So far, so good!

I still have them, put off to the side out of the sun...a couple were starting to develop cracks since they are so old, but I suppose as long as the tubes hold air they are OK for short trips. I have another parts truck or two to pick up from a friend's ranch, I might use them for those trucks...
