Can We Get a 'Warm Start Issues' Sticky?

I don't have an explanation as to why some are hard start and some are not. As others have suggested it could be an IP problem. However, one of my trucks that has this issue has a new pump on it. So far the modification to the GP card has greatly reduced the hard starting issue on the...

Can We Get a 'Warm Start Issues' Sticky?

Next time this happens, try manually turning on the glow plugs for about 5-8 seconds and see if it starts. I have 2 trucks that do the same thing, after sitting for 30-60 minutes it takes at least 10 seconds of cranking. I found that turning on the GP's for a short period of time, they start...

M1009 Glow Plug Controller- Missing Capacitor

Capacitor On one of the cards that I have here it is a 10uf 25v electrolytic. The negative lead goes away from the card edge connector. Karl

changed 13G'S to AC60's and now have voltage guage issue Need assistance

Doghead is correct, it sounds like your GP system is working as it was designed to. One bad GP will change the voltage to the remaining good glow plugs. The card was protecting the remaining GP's by cycling the power to them. The after glow only happens when the card determine that it needs to...

    G/P Ground

HMMWV heads are 24 volt. CUCV heads are 12 volt isolated ground.

    It's all magic.

    G/P Ground

I just went out and looked at my M1009. This is how its wired: Front battery ground goes to the Negative buss bar. Neg. buss bar has a heavy wire to engine intake manifold bolt. This is the ground to the glow plugs. Also on the intake manifold bolt connection is the ground strap to the vehicle...

    G/P Ground

The thin wire is not the glow plug ground. It can not handle the 100 amps that glow plugs draw. The thin wire is the glow plug module ground. If it is not connected the glow plug module will not function properly.

    G/P Ground

It's labeled "Ground Strap". It grounds the engine block, the engine block provides the ground for the glow plugs. Correction: This ground strap does not ground the engine. It provides a ground to the vehicle body from the engine.

    G/P Ground

TM-2320-289-20 Appendix F, Figure F-1 Engine Starting Circuits clearly shows the ground for the glow plugs. It's marked "Ground Strap" Appendix F, Figure F-7 Glow Plug Circuits clearly shows the ground location for the glow plug module.

What is the current draw of the glow plugs?

Sorry, intended to say MEGA fuse. My mistake. Karl

What is the current draw of the glow plugs?

I used a piece of #2 from the batteries to a modified DC distribution block and then shortened the factory wire with the fusible link to the 12 volt junction near the GP relay. I moved the buss bar over one hole to allow for a 12 volt only stud, the rest of the bar is still 24 volts. Eventually...

    M1028 shakes with full tank.

My M1008 does the same thing. The fuel door rattles like crazy at idle, I have not noticed a correlation between the rattle and the fuel level. I keep the truck full of fuel at all times. The truck always starts and runs great. When I start driving it again (after the road salt goes away) I...

What is the current draw of the glow plugs?

I finally had time to measure the GP current and voltage today on a stock M1009 that has the standard resistor bypass procedure completed. Test Set Up: Cold engine approximately 58 degrees F. 4) AC60G glow plugs connected. Resistor bypass procedure completed. Installed ammeter inline at the...

Red Ball Militaria and MV Parts Swap Meet - Jim Thorpe PA 3/1/14

I will be there with CUCV glow plug cards. I may have a few other CUCV parts as well.

Glow plug card burnt, Can this be fixed? or do i just go with manual switch?

What is the resistance value between the 2nd metal contact down (on the edge of the card near your burnt trace repair) and the one at the very bottom of the GP card? Or, plug the GP card in and disconnect the Light Blue wire from the relay. Measure the resistance between the Light Blue wire and...

What is the current draw of the glow plugs?

This is on my list of electrical modifications to do as well. The only difference is that I am planning on adding a 125 to 150 amp circuit breaker or fuse. I will need to do a little more research on what my current demands will be. Any additional wiring that is done in a vehicle needs to have a...

What is the current draw of the glow plugs?

That's a great question. Unfortunately I no longer own that truck. But I do know that the batteries were good. So I would guess/estimate that the voltage was around 12.8 VDC. I did not measure the voltage before, during or after the tests. I was just interested in current draw. I may just...

    Heater/heat output M1009

You may want to read some of the Similar Threads found near the bottom of this page. There is lots of information on here from people that have found various reasons (and cures) for the low heat issue common to CUCV's. A little bit of searching and reading will help you diagnose and repair...

What is the current draw of the glow plugs?

I finally found the ammeter pictures. Full scale is 50 amps on the meter. One picture is the current draw for 4 glow plugs and the other is for 2 glow plugs. The pictures were taken after about 5-10 seconds of heating time. This M1009 truck has the resistor by-pass modification. Karl
