    M1008 retro build

The reason GM built the 6.2 diesel was fuel economy. Diesel was cheaper. The reason the DoD used it was single fuel battlefield. If not for single fuel battlefield, the 292 would have been used. But with a TH400.

    M1031 to RV tug..

Not ever going to happen. I try to keep EGT under 600°F at 65 MPH unloaded but things like hills and headwind will cause rises to over 1000. Hence the need for water injection. Adding mass of water is equivalent to high EGR rates in a modern diesel but without increase of manifold pressure...

    2019 TX MV Rally

Had a great time, seeing old friends and making new. This is now a must attend event. Will be perfecting the brisket. The worst I ever did was edible ;)

    Fire Extinguisher

Ive used Halon, CO2, ABC and Purple K for B and C class fires, I am not impressed with Halon for petroleum fires as it has far less cooling capacity compared to carbon dioxide. Halon knocks the fire down for certain but the danger of flashback is there if the fumes from the fuel contact metal...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Long time ago. Never had to R&R the fuel pump, now I see why some go with an electric. But $20 and 3 hours of work was cheaper. Sore today.

    M1031 to RV tug..

Usually 230 F and lower after 20 seconds or so of street driving. Just starting up? 180 F. I have been using EGT to help economy, trying to keep the temperature under 600F on the highway.

    14 Bolt Rear Open Conversion?

Something isn't right. The locker in my 1031 only gives me a clue it is back there once a week at the most. Usually rain slick roads, making a sharp turn under power. Then just a jerk/snap. I have learned how to not make it do that..most of the time. You cannot easily delete the Detroit...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

The M1031 was leaving a good size spot of diesel wherever parked so I swapped the fuel pump. Went to the crazy Irish parts place, their part number M16140. Perfect fit, lifetime warranty. $20 plus the governor's cut. The install was not easy, thanks to 30 F temperature, tight spaces and...

    Truck names - whats yours?

My M1031 SECM is now known as Tug. The travel trailer is 7800 pounds all up with full fresh water and 60 pounds of propane. So that stock 6.2 diesel has a bit of a tug of war. Things are changing in the power department..first a few more gears needed ;). How many more? 3. TCI 6x. A...

    Largest battery combinations? M1028

Optima Spiral Cell batteries have very large surface area which is why they have great current output for the weight. They are much lower weight which means less reserve. Yes, great CCA but after 30 seconds of pre-glow, there might not be enough capacity left to crank for 30 seconds. AGM have...

Working on the FV1801A or Truck, 1/4 Ton, 4×4, CT, Austin Mk.1 AKA Austin Champ

I was not close to giving up ;). My goal was getting at least one engine running. Some people donate blood for medical good. Others play rugby. I spin wrenches at Mark's. My right hand and wrist look like I had encountered a bad kitty. Guess a battery tester is needed in the 1031.

    Cucv wrecker

You can pull that door ding out with a suction cup. Wipe some molasses on it to get good seal, then lift it right out. Or push it from the inside.

    grounding issue?

All power supplies will have a draw on the supply side (24 volts in this case) so it is best to take from a switched source so you won't drain batteries when the vehicle is off. Get your negative from the rear battery.

    2019 TX MV Rally BUY/SELL/TRADE

You will be fine. I predate humans landing on the moon. And I am a younger part of the crowd.

    grounding issue?

Common on any switched mode power supply. There is a large capacitance on the input side (24 volt) which acts like an instant short until the voltage equals battery voltage. For safety, most have a high value bleed resistor or other load to drain this voltage when off. Which means the...

    2019 TX MV Rally BUY/SELL/TRADE

My first in four years. Plus the off road stuff. I'm not wasting my vacation. Any welding needs? Aluminum included. Will trade for food :) If you have a Hastalloy, Inconel/Inco item or any unique alloy, let me know in advance so I can get filler. But all weldable aluminum, steel or...

Rattle from front of engine. Alternator?

Options? Machine the OD and bush to restore diameter. The bushing should be retained by anaerobic adhesive or thermally pressed on with a cold interference fit. A motor repair shop should be able to do this easily. A machinist will probably charge more, mostly for break in cost. Brush...

    Recovering vehicle markings

A mixture of xylene and paint thinner, increasing the xylene until it cuts the obliterating rattle can spray. The required strength varies with the time the rattle can has been on. Unit markings are almost always done with rattle can. But it has been done thick and had plenty of time to cure...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

A bone stock 6X is perfect. I want original shift mechanism, probably with a new index in the dash as the detents are in the transmission. To the casual observer, it will be a nearly stock M1031. My only worries are on the non-stock first (2.97) gear set. Any weakness should have showed up...
