I think the TH400 could be built to take a 6BT's power and the GV OD would help with RPM's but at the end of the day you are stuck with a non-lockup trans which is great at burning fuel to make torque converter heat and not put power to the ground. It sounds like you are comfortable with the...
It sounds like you are trying to create something that doesn't exist off the shelf so it will either be almost impossible or take lots of green. A cummins swap (with a good trans, not bolted to a TH400) is a huge chunk, rooftop A/C and generators starts to take up space and becomes expensive...
What do you want to do? They are equally stout rigs and very capable, just for different things. The M1008 will be better at four wheeling and towing due to less weight but you won't be as comfy camping out back. Then again if you throw money at it, a shelter would slide right in when you need...
I agree, anything without particulate cats can run on various blends. May not be good for the IP or legal...but atleast you can. That is not true for the ULSD diesel rigs out. Old school rules!!!
Buy a high pressure hydraulic gauge and do the proper checks as suggested. The TH400 is a big dumb transmission. If the governor or throttle pressures are spot on, you either have a sticky shift valve (easily fixable on the truck without too much experience), or clutch/brake issues (requiring...
That is a sweet work rig but trying to move that kind of GVW at high speed with a 6.2 could be borderline dangerous. You will have fully freighted 80k lb trucks passing you. For that kind of money, you could buy a mint 1st Gen Cummins Dodge, a Deuce + M1008 + M1009, or a 5 Ton + a 90's Honda...
If you don't want to shell out money for a pressure tester some dye and a black light work awesome for finding leaks. Drop some in the coolant, run for a bit, then shut down and have a groovy time finding the snail trail ;)
Looks solid in the photo...hopefully it works out. As a rule of thumb, most of these rigs will need $1-2k worth of work right out of the gate to be reliable. Of course you may get one that has had the big ticket items taken care of. Receipts are good proof of that. Most notably are IP, batts...
I think you would be ok. Highway stuff may keep you in the slow lane, you would want to invest in a better tans and some more power. Then you decide if investing the money to change a CUCV is worth it or better off with another truck with a better suited driveline. Sticking a Cummins in gives...
The larger one is the feed. Sometimes tracing from the tank is tough. Just follow the larger diameter steel line that comes up the passenger side framerail near the shock and brake line.
I can't speak on the Cuck Vee's behalf but all mechanically driven New Process cases will have a color coded gear. You can also count the teeth if the gear has any left. Pull the drive mechanism out and check the color. Any 4wd shop should be able to source one for you.
Auto parts store + 24v starter = boom
Probably better off with a shop or atleast find a store with someone that has a pulse. A simple VAT40 would do the trick and most shops have one of those antiques (which still work great) to give you amperage figures. Plus it is real world in the truck data.
