I haven't seen any type of mechanical "fail-safe" mechanism in any of the air systems I've disassembled so far...just an air diaphragm that pushes into the master cylinder to engage brakes. If you open the drain petcock and leave it open, there's no air pressure to activate the...
I started some work on 2 more trailers; one has REALLY bad rust damage and will need extensive surgery in order to restore it. I have some 3/16-inch steel sheet I will use to weld in patch panels, after cutting out the cancerous ones.
I finally have made some time to get some work done on these M105A2 trailers I recovered last summer.
I started with the best one and used it as my test subject. I wanted the M105-series because the bed is large enough to haul my quad and its associated gear without any trouble or effort...
Electric over hydraulic actuators are expensive, but effective.
I welded on some brackets to my M105A2 so I could bolt on a DICO Aero surge hitch with 2-inch coupler; the hitch unbolts and will set in a cradle I still need to install on top of the tongue, so if I want to reinstall the lunette...
I recovered 5 M105A2 trailers from Nellis AFB last summer; when I was towing one of them I noticed an increase in resistance from the trailer. I pulled over and felt that the hubs & brake drums were hot. I opened the air tank drain valve and kept it open for the rest of the drive, and the...
You could weld/bolt on a surge brake coupler, remove the air lines, and run the brakes as straight hydraulic. Surge brake couplers can even be obtained with lunette eyes. That way you could tow it with any 3/4-ton or larger vehicle.
Didn't see this posted earlier, but it's a great description of the Hydro-Max system including some plumbing & wiring diagrams:

I have the chassis for a 1994 Chevy Kodiak sitting in my yard...
Bob brings up a good point about the Cat switches; I own a D4 and have been operating several different Cats this past year. Each and every one could have the switch operated with a small pair of needle-nose pliers. My cousin called his pliers his "universal Caterpillar key."
Very nice! Nice touch with the garden hose for a cable protector; I usually use large-diameter fuel line, but the garden hose is cheaper and just as effective! Good job!
My wife just shakes her head and walks away...especially when it's something she wants fixed, and I get to break out something I've held on to for years just for that occasion...
Congrats on the recovery and successful trip home!
Greenjeepster: Re: your signature line - the ultimate show of manhood is when your kids love you enough to want to be just like you! Good job!
