    M818/ Cummins NA250

Joe, the only thing they did was add the super singles (in addition to a few other mods like adding lockers and a fording kit). That is how it was brought up to USMC standards. There are no mechanical differences between a USMC truck and a non-USMC truck. I agree with what you are saying...

    M818/ Cummins NA250

I will add this point of clarification. If your truck is used mostly for show, or is used almost exclusively on level ground (i.e., you live in a flat state), you will be happy with 1600s. If, however, you drive mostly in hilly areas, or pull heavy loads, you won't like 1600s as much. I would...

    M818/ Cummins NA250

I would consider putting the 1100s back on there. I think they would get as much performance out of smaller tires as they would a larger or more efficient motor. The tires are killing it. They were not designed for it. I have said this before. This is a reason people call them HEMTT...

    M818/ Cummins NA250

There is one problem here. He is talking about the older NHC250 and you are referring to the newer 6CTA 8.3 Cummins. Without a doubt, the newer motor is better. Guys who think the older motor is better are guys who have never owned a 6CTA motor...or they have driven a dog in the military and...

Jason, that is an important point. Thanks!

    M818/ Cummins NA250

The NHC250, while a reliable motor, is not a powerhouse...and you just killed whatever power it did have but adding the larger tires. The larger tires will give you more road speed, as you probably know, but you will regret them if you have to climb hills frequently. Going to 1400X20s would...

    HEMTT Update

    Stuart, very cool.

What is a HEMTT really worth?

The one on ARMYJEEPS.NET has been sold...assuming it is the one that was for sale in KY. Figure you will spend $50K for a HEMTT that is in running condition. You will pay more if it is cherry, like STALWARTs truck or like my old M977 that is in my avatar. If you have $50-75K, and you are...

    Tatras in the american army

NEIOWA, OK, so the US Army purchased some of the MAN tractors before the HEMTT came into inventory. Makes sense to me! Thanks!

    Tatras in the american army

I always find it interesting to see pics of foreign vehicles in US service and vice versa. I had no idea the US Army used Tatras! Along the same lines, I know the US Army used some MAN trucks. I am not sure why the US Army used MAN 8X8s when they had the HEMTT, which serves the same purpose...

    M989 11 ton trailer questions

RWBROWN72, the M989 is not a lowboy. If you are looking for a lowboy for you M818, start looking for an M172/A1. Even those trailers are heavy (when loaded) for an M818. The M172/A1 weighs in the range of 18,000 pounds unloaded.

Retirement of the Tracked M270 MLRS

RWBROWN72, I am sure you are right. However, imagine being on a battlefield somewhere. Now imagine it just rained...or previous incoming rounds turned the field into the moon. Now, try to drive over it with an FMTV (which is no more capable off-road than an M939 series truck...and if it is...

    M989 11 ton trailer questions

There is a reason that the specified tow vehicle is a HEMTT. Think about it.

Retirement of the Tracked M270 MLRS

Thanks for sharing. That is crazy IMHO that they are doing away with the tracked variant. Wheels...can never replace tracks. They can only augment them. It does not take a rocket scientist to understand that a wheeled vehicle CANNOT go where a tracked vehicle can.

Kenny, you submitted you post just as I was typing mine. Sorry for the duplication.
