Neat opportunity! Closest I ever got was a T-38! LOL I wasn't a "Zoomie" but have to acknowledge that they have some REALLY KEWL STUFF! Best food, best quarters, best equipment I ever had in the military was with the USAF! Then, it was back to Army life. LOL Thanks for sharing!

DH, thank you very much. :beer: I was suspecting that with and without shims the bendex gear rotation shaft was at an angle to the engine. Not "straight" out and in, hence the truck would start, but the gear wouldn't engage fully. I will pull cover and check.

Had that happen also. Was a real joy to repair last year. Snapped the bolt off in the block. Agree with DH, check when changing oil. My starter just "died" this last Friday. Had another starter shipped in from Chicago. Mounted it this morning. Both were "no shim" starters, the old one had...
