    Starting MEP002/003

Good luck with the recovery, I know what that is like the last couple of years, I had a double set of unrelated health issues over the last 21 months, although not as bad as yours. First I fell and broke my back, spent 4 months in a back brace, still hurts most days now, some more than others...

    002A muffler??

Most of the noise is mechanical, and while lots of people like to complain about them, they really are not that bad. Probably about as loud as a riding lawn mower at medium engine speed, although with a less harsh exhaust note. i would not want one running outside my bedroom window at night...

    Lessons from my 002a

Glad you managed to get it free, although it would have probably been better if you had let it soak for a week or so. I have had good results using a 50/50 mix of ATF and Marvel Mystery oil on the past in such circumstances. If you have to rebuild, be aware the military does not use oversized...

    tachometer for gensets

One correction to leedawgs statement, The MEP-002a is a 4 pole generator so generates 2 cycles of electricity per rotation and therefore runs at 1800 rpms while generating 60 Hz. (1800 rpms = 30 engine rotations per second = 60 Hz). If this were a 2 pole generator like the MEP-015/016/017...

    Happy Happy Happy

It is much better to run a generator under load even when doing monthly exercise, prolonged repetitive exercise runs without load and without giving the generator time to come up to temperature is a recipe for wet stacking and carbon build up as well as breakdown of engine oil. Having said that...

    Happy Happy Happy

When you idle the voltage regulator goes to full output on the excitation coils trying to maintain output voltage, this in turns causes the voltage regulator to burn out, most often the component that fails first is the output transistor. So it is NEVER a good idea to idle these units on start...

    Flaky frequency meter?

I too like the Hardy Diesel meters, the only problem is the display can be washed out in full daylight.

    Flaky frequency meter?

Most likely the frequency transducer, although it could also be in the meter itself, these things get a lot of vibration, and vibration breaks stuff (connections, solder joints, etc.) Ike

Glad to hear you have it going. Ike

    mep016d new owner

Before wiring up anything to the output lugs read over this ongoing thread http://www.steelsoldiers.com/auxiliary-equipment/92309-mep-016d-voltage-wiring.html Oh, also I will be in the Lake Charles area at my mother in laws later this afternoon / evening so if you get confused feel free to...

My first MEP-701A / couple questions

I think it is unique to the MEP-016b and its 400Hz and maybe its 28VDC only cousins. I know it is different from the MEP-002a and MEP-003a, not sure about the MEP-017a or MEP-018a, of course any parts for those two would likely be getting fairly old by now. Ike p.s. one word of warning if you...

My first MEP-701A / couple questions

each wire has a long alpha-numeric combination printed on them, these match the numbers on the old wires and on the wiring diagram (I think ones is something like F85, and other is 804A), the military spares no expense with things like custom printed wires, anyone else would put little A,B,C,D...

    Mystery fuel MEP-002

I read a report online a couple of years ago about regional fuels being used in MEP generators, mostly it talked about increased wear due to lubrication properties of some fuels, specific mention of Russian Jet fuel being used in place of JP8 in Afghanistan, causing a high failure rate on...

My first MEP-701A / couple questions

If it does turn out to be the battery charging regulator that is bad, there are new (built about 10 years ago) drop in replacements for sale on ebay for $100. Forum rules do not allow me to post a link to an ebay auction or buy it now, but you can find it by doing an ebay search for "libby...

Generator Conductor to House Panel Question

Ok, we seem to be rambling around a bit here, but here goes: 3 phase vs 1 phase motors - think of 3 phase motors as motors that get 3 nudges around each rotation, reverse the order of the nudges and it spins the other way, if you were to build a single phase motor the same way with 1 nudge per...

Generator Conductor to House Panel Question

While the wire is often rated at 90 degrees C, the terminals they connect to are usually at 60 or 75 degrees so become the limiting factor. Ike

Generator Conductor to House Panel Question

There is way too little information here to answer your question, and you really should start your own thread instead of reviving a year old thread. As to answering your question, I would say it does not sound very safe on the surface, instead consider getting a pin and sleeve female connector...

Another online write up of MEP Generators

Well I just ran across an online write up about using MEP generators and thought I would share Generator-Diesel Part III | It seems to be part 3 of a series on back up generators, I have only skimmed it so far and it seems to be basic information. Just thought some of you might be interested...

    MEP005 Questions

The rubber governor weight cage is a common problem in older Stanadyne / RoosaMaster injection pumps, They came out with and improved material in the late 1980's so anytime you run across one of their pumps that is older than this, or not rebuilt since then it should be highly suspect. Ike
