Why do these gen sets have three fuel pumps? Because they have SIX filters and strainers! Yes, two elements, a strainer+water separator and each fuel pump has a fine strainer.
The bottoms come off with a twist, then the filter is inside. If you are having fueling issues, check these as they...
The overall condition plus the yellow stenciling screams new. 2.9 hours? You lucky skunk.
I was fixing the rust outs on the tank of my 002 today. Using the flap wheel to knock the paint off, I uncovered the yellow stenciling under the top coat of CARC.
I'm really jealous. I still have...
Decided to flap wheel the outside of the corroded sections and patch instead of replace, just too much grinding.
Found another 5 pinholes. Drilled/ground all the holes back to good metal and TIG welded all shut. Took just 5 minutes of weld time but 2 hours of prep, the standard of rust weld...
If the injection pump is excessively hot, that is the problem. The pressure of the fuel multiplied by the volume of flow is energy, an internal leak in the IP will cause that energy to be dissipated as heat. Same thing as a hydraulic power unit if the flow under pressure is allowed to trickle...
That generator probably never went to the field. How many hours on the Hobbs?
I can tell my 002a was with a NG/Reserve unit based on age and the shoddy fuel system condition. Around 1400 hours, based on MFG date, it only saw 2 weeks a year running. I pulled the valve cover, like new...
Why does the ID tag say it is a 400 Hz? Yet you have a 60 Hz frequency meter.
Main circuit breaker off? That would do it. Other issues are voltage regulator, there is a procedure to flash the field because if they aren't run in a while, residual magnetism in the field decays over time...
Usually, rebuilds have a depot facility tag attached to the unit. And new Hobbs meter is installed.
Engines are rebuilt as required. Windings are tested, inspected and repaired. Bearings replaced. Look in the -24 at the SMR code's maintenance level. Anything with a D is tested/inspected or...
Yes, milo, it IS the transducer. How this thing works is the frequency is determined by the transducer, the output to the meter is a direct current which is an analog of the frequency.
The meter is a simple permanent magnet galvanometer. The windings are incredibly fine, probably 0-20...
Well, looks like metal replacement is the best idea. The bottom and back, up to the long seam weld, will need replacement. I can either grind out the side seam welds, then edge weld to the sides or just do a butt weld. 18 gauge, easily bent for the radiused bottom in either case.
I'm going...
Price? What the market will bear. You probably won't get much action on craig's but the classifieds here would be the best. Think of your brothers here, plus no commission. Sure, shipping might be a bear but if you make the buyer pay, all is covered.
If my 002 were set up for stationary...
It always helps to find the root cause. I'm not trying to be a donkey, just trying to be helpful. :)
Took a look at that relay, yes you can remove the cover with the two nuts and voila, there are the points. About a 3 on my difficulty scale. you can do it
I'm having this problem with my 002a. I took the ammeter apart last night, shattering the lock ring on the back to gain access. The problem was the damping magnet that had come loose from the fixture, pinching the aluminum damping vane (much like the damping vane on a reloading scale, eddy...
The relay points are probably fried. If you have skills, you might be able to file them. But those are real skills.
The ammeter on my 002A had condensate on the inside glass. It wouldn't work so I tore into it. Not having a lock ring tool, I shattered the lock ring. Case came apart, it was...
I guess Auto Zone has discontinued the Fram filters that fit the 002 and 003a generators.
I try to support the local but it has become hard to do. I'm sick of paying more for stuff made in China locally than domestic I can get online. Yes, I would pay more.
Rock Auto almost always has a...
The exhaust is from that pipe nipple, the louvers open when the temperature rises, it is controlled by an air thermostat (thermal motor). Now, why no black soot? That is an IDI diesel (pre-chamber) and it is 70 cubic inches. One horsepower is equivalent to 748 Watts, give or take. Now both...
If not swappable, a good machine shop can easily take care of the broken glow plug. Probably under $50.
Parts aren't cheap, repair of what we have is a must.
Finally got my 002a home and started working on it. First was the fuel tank, once off, I saw the evidence of leaks. Sure enough, a line of pin holes in the bottom at the drain. The drain was concave in, making a trap for water that couldn't be drained.
Oh well, plenty of rust busting...
They are over-built for certain. Frequency is set by engine RPM, that massive 140 cubic inch IDI diesel is far more stable than any 600 CC gasoline twin used on most 10 kW commercial generators.
Output of the generator is based on the torque of the engine overcoming the back EMF of the load...
