Changed a few of mine in the past. And estimating with the cord did the trick as a few inches over is not going to hurt. I used welding cables as well for the (usually missing) jump start sockets.

Sounds like your about due a new clutch as it has reached the extreme of adjustment. If there is no thread left to adjust out to Free play it will eventually just drag all the time. The wear facter and thus the pedel hieght depends on the type of clutch construction. Some wear Low, some wear High.
When you get lash ups like this from previouse owners, don't keep trusting to wiggling and twisting, especially as the obviouse short circuit is causing damage (even a fire is possible!) just take out the switch, remove any surplus wires that are not supposed to go there, re-wire the radio...
