This one is cracked, the heater has a big dent in it, so it's not surprising, I still have a good unit, though.
The disc is item #41 in the diagram.
The Benmar heater model number is AP-3050 and the NSN is 2540-00-186-2558
It's one of those days, cool and overcast, so it's not too fun to work outside. Took apart a Benmar heater and noticed that it doesn't use a wick, like the Stewart & Warner units, but has a ceramic block with the igniter running right through it. I kind of like that, should make it more...
Do a search with "alcohol evaporator" as keywords...lots of hits here.
You will find the kits on ebay from time to time and they are covered in most TMs, both -10 and -20 for the vehicles in question. Part of the cold weather kit, keeps any water in the system from freezing, so it's a good...
Brandon and GF picked up Kipman's towbars this morning and also the trailer that belongs to Robert Miller. All will be brought to the rally next week, the trailer may or may not be picked up by Robert at that time since he has been working out-of-town lately....arrangements may have to be...
Thanks Will, I may take you up on the offer.
So, if there is no visible smoke, does it still get a "1"?
I'll have to run the coolant heater longer to get a feel for the exhaust, it may smoke a lot in the beginning because of the cooling effect of the coolant in the heat exchanger, which holds...
That's correct Will, still a lot of maintenance to do on the deuce and no tags or insurance either for that matter. Just use it in the yard when the crane is needed....sorry Brad.
The transmission PTO is on the right side so it's a straight shot to the front with the winch flipped over. The transmission shift linkages are on the left (auto tranny). It's not hydraulic.
There are check valves in the air system plumbing, so you may want to study the diagrams in the TMs also in case you don't get air to something using an external supply.
Thanks, it's a starting point. Found a chart...
I was concerned that the smoke from my coolant heater is a sign of a problem, but an old test report states that the exhaust may have a "smoke number of 1", while the fuel burning personnel heater has no visible exhaust smoke.
Thanks Squirt-Truck, that's what I suspected, it was mounted upside down to get the drive on the PTO side.
I'd like to see a level winder on top, but a special mounting bracket would have to be fabricated.
It is a standard 20K Garwood, the tag is down below.
I'm not actually in the market for a...
Does anybody have a chart or picture that represents examples of the different smoke numbers? For example, what does "smoke number 1" look like in real life?
(It's an air pollution thing)
TIA
Checked the calibration of a Benmar fuel valve today for a break in the routine and found it working right off the bat, something that the South Wind heaters never did (five out of five have needed work).
If the rest of the heater works as well, I'll be swapping it for the South Wind unit, now...
Adjusted the flame detector switch and started the heater.
Test 1 (08:20)
Time to flame ( I can hear the rumble from the flame): 20 seconds
Time to light (flame detector switch): 90 seconds
It now runs continuously, but smokes badly, so I turn it off after 1 minute. The purge time is about 2...
