    Dumb electrical question...

When the generator lights are on, there is a problem and the alternators are not charging. Fully charged batteries have a voltage of 12.6 when rested for 24 hours after charging. This can be higher due to heat or recent charge. To charge a battery, voltage must be 14-14.2 volts. The wiring...

DIY 24 to 12 volt starter conversion

Half the current draw means brushes last much longer. Aside from the pinion (drive gear) and bearings, there isn't much to go wrong in a starter. Brushes are the most common failure mode.

    Problem?

Each alternator charges one 12 volt battery and each alternator is regulated to produce 13.8-14.2 volts. It does this by sensing the voltage off the battery it is to charge. If this voltage is lower than the actual battery voltage, you will get such overcharging. This sensing is done off the...

She won't start in the cold!

This must be a new issue as it was running fine last month. Could be dirt in the injectors. Stanadyne makes a great diesel system cleaner. If not, servicing the injectors is something i can do next time I am down there. White smoke means non-burning diesel, probably only one bum injector if...

She won't start in the cold!

Don't touch fuel delivery, that is not the problem! First, do not leave the engine stop pulled, what this does is cut off the fuel completely. The diesel which lubricates this mechanism gels, preventing the control collar from moving when the engine is Arctic cold. When you push the engine...

    Charging issue!

Battery voltage fully charged AND RESTED will be 12.6-12.8. Fresh off the charger, they will be 13.8-14. Dead and rested will be 11.0-12. Voltage is also temperature dependent, higher temps will make for higher voltages. "Rested" means 12 hours from charging or discharging. If you have 24...

    Grade 8 Starter Bolts?

If they break, then you have a massive pain to drill for the extractor. That was a nice 4 hour job a few months ago with stock bolts. Ever try drilling a grade 8 bolt? There isn't anywhere to get a mag base drill attached, then you have to CENTER the drill in the bolt, not an easy task if...

    m1008 surging. bad injection pump??

    30. STALLS UNDER DECELERATION OR HEAVY BRAKING Step 1. Check idle speed, (See TM 9-2320-289-20) Step 2. Remove governor Cover-. (See paragraph 3-38) Check for black particles, If black particles are evident, replace governor weight retaining ring. (See paragraph 3-42) Step 3. Remove governor...

    Charging system advice M1010

Good job on the wiring from the top alternator to the 24 volt bus. At 100 amperes, 10 gauge wire with a 6" section of flame resistant (PVC at bare minimum, silicone better) as a fusible link is a good idea. I'm a Mechanical Engineer but with 12 semester hours of electronics, network theory...

    Charging system advice M1010

Well, if you installed a jumper from the top to the bottom on the +24 volt output, you doubled the current. This might be an issue on really dead batteries or high loads. The ignition wire only draws 3-6 amperes, it could also overload but it is fuse protected at 20 amps. You could have used...

    Charging system advice M1010

Without going over it in person, you probably have a better setup. You see, back in the 1980s, high power MOSFETs were just not available, hence the complex setup of the Duvac/Twinput. The problem with this original setup is number of connections AND the switching of the upper alternator by...

    Charging system advice M1010

Fully charged 6-cell lead acid batteries are 12.6-12.8 volts. Fresh off a charger, the voltage can be as high as 13.8 volts due to "surface charge" effects. This will drop to 12.6-12.8 volts after a day or so as the charge is absorbed into the plates. The full charge voltage varies with...

    Charging system advice M1010

Ok, so it equalizes with the engine off. 12.3 volts means about 50% charged 2cents I just found some mention that it divides the input (24 volt) in half to go to the 12 volt side. This would mean the A battery will charge at 1/2 the alternator output, around 14.2. Cool.

    Charging system advice M1010

The reason I question this is because the rated efficiency of 97% sounds pretty good until the vehicle is shut off. If it continues to keep the A battery at 14.2 volts, the B battery would be discharged within hours. What is each battery's voltage after the engine is shut off for 12 hours?

    Charging system advice M1010

I should have put it "alternator sensed" as full charge voltage for a 24 volt system is 28.5 volts, it won't "charge" the 12 volt side unless it has this voltage.

    Charging system advice M1010

Fantastic! Just the info needed. So it has an ignition sense so it won't try to charge the A battery from the A+B voltage, such a situation would certainly kill the B battery. I would assume this ignition sense would be voltage of the A+B.

Are there any paperback maintenance manuals?

About $40. Forget lamination, that would be about $500. Just get sheet protectors for the sections you are using. 3 ring binders, for the win.:grd:

Are there any paperback maintenance manuals?

The pdf versions are identical and hyperlinked. Yes, it can be a bear but just print the sections you need. Once done, insert into a binder. You realize most -20 and greater were ring bound because it was cheaper to revise. All units issued TMs would get updates with a page or two of...

    Charging system advice M1010

If you replace the top alternator with a 12 volt, you will need to provide switched ignition line (12volt) to the alternator if it needs it and a separate line to the firewall junction block. Then you will have to remove the associated wiring as there still could be 12 and 24 volt leads to...

    Charging system advice M1010

The application in the 1010 is different than most isolator/equalizers in that the 12 volt system is the A battery (12 volt ). The Sure Power converter Lavarock used works although I do not know how it works with 24 volt jump starting or if the output voltage is sufficient (14.2) to fully...
