New! 2009 GA Rally Multimedia Thread

I will definitely be there in 2010 and will be bringing my Deuce and possibly towing an M105A2 as well. Fantastic rally in 2009. I also can bring firewood if needed.

    Oil

I run John Deere +50 in my Deuce and both of my tractors. I have been very satisfied with the low oil consumption, fast oil pressure build and easier starting in cold weather. My engines all seem to be cleaner inside as well.

Looking at a trailer mounted MEP-003a at GL

I bought a trailer mounted MEP-003A from GL and picked it up at Ft Jackson. I did not preview it, but I looked at the photos to make sure it seemed to have all the parts. Most of the generators at Ft Jackson at the time were junk, missing parts, etc. but this fact was evident from the photos...

    M151 Origin??

Ford designed the MUTT and initially entertained the thoughts of marketing a civilian model. Obviously, they went with another design for the original Bronco, a semi-copy of the International Scout.

    Running gas in a Deuce

When I was in the Army in 1970-71, we were instructed not to use MOGAS in multifuels unless it was an emergency. We were to use diesel only and if gasoline had to be used to mix it with as much diesel as available. We were not warned about possible damage to the IP, we were warned about damage...

    M715 bogs going up hills?

I drove a 1968 M-715 while stationed in Germany in 1970 for about a 4 month period of time. I was lucky in that I drove it all over Germany to many different bases, much of it through the Alps. Much of it was also pulling a trailer, sometimes heavily loaded. I loved to drive that truck. It...

    1963 Popular Mechanics Article

One other thing I just remembered is that Deuce drivers complained about Deuces with vertical exhaust wet-stacking and blowing black oil and crud all over the truck, which they then had to clean off. Deuces tended to sit around idling for extended periods of time.

    1963 Popular Mechanics Article

As Clinto mentioned, I believe all the early multifuels all had the rear side exhaust. When I was in the Army (1970-71) there were gassers and multifuels both in service. Many of the 5 tons were also still gassers. Some of our trucks were from the early 50s. Some of the Deuce's were being...

switching from DOT 5 to DOT 4 brake fluid

I don't know about problems mixing DOT 4 and DOT 5, but I do know that DOT 4 attracts water just like DOT 3. DOT 5 does not attract water as it is silicone based. DOT 5 is far superior to DOT 3 or DOT 4, albeit more expensive. I would recommend sticking with DOT 5 and thereby avoiding any...

    Concrete

Make sure you compact as much as you can and use gravel as the base, use plenty of re-bar, 4,000 - 4,500 psi concrete. Don't scrimp on any of the three and you will do fine. I saw someone jacking up a truck once, and the jack punched a hole in 4-inch concrete, and it was undoubtedly a low PSI...

    M35a2 V.S. my house

Man, really sorry to hear about your house! I hope you don't have problems with your homeowners insurance. Or perhaps it would be covered by your liability policy on the Deuce. You should probably try to put in a claim against your Buddy's insurance first. That will be an expensive repair.

    Parking Brake won't release

I haven't had problems with my Deuce cable freezing up, but I have had other vehicles e-brake cables freeze up. Dittle's idea of the torpedo heater is a very good one. I have done this and it works well - just make sure you aren't cooking anything under your truck with it.

deuce wont crank when its cold out

If your truck starts when warmer, but not when colder, another trick is to try heating the starter solenoid with a heat gun and see if it will then start. Next, try heating the relay. One caveat - don't use too much heat! It takes a few minutes for the heat to penetrate and heat the insides...

To Winch or Not to Winch a No-Winch M35A2? Opinions

I've driven Deuces with and without winches in the Army, but only a winch truck in recent years. The only difference I've ever noticed is the obvious difference in the extension of the front end. I have had people tell me that front tires wear out faster with a winch due to the extra weight...

    Successful recovery!

Congratulations on your new Deuce! It looks really good. You were lucky to find such a good truck so close.

    Lost Fifth Gear

The transmission is now out of the Deuce and I'm moving the PTO over to the replacement trans I got from TWRIGHT. Had to clean up the PTO - it was full of trash, but gears look good. I need to replace the rubber boot, which looked good before removal. Old transmission is toast - sorry no pics...
