I've found the DPLF flows *much* better with that optional acetone in the mix, I don't even use the full 1/2 part but just a splash seems to help a lot.
The stuff I got was 44GN011 Water Reducible Epoxy Primer and only about 1 month expired.
It's water-reducible so I'm not totally sold on using...
Right now there is a lot of PPG aerospace epoxy primer on the secondary market (Ebay, etc.) for very reasonable prices. Mostly just expired Boeing surplus. I picked up a small pallet worth a few months back. :)
If you do use DPLF, be very sure to honor the specified induction time...
If you are FULL it's not so bad, since then the water can't get any interesting wave effects. If you are mostly empty, the weight isn't enough to mess you up too badly. I don't know where along the line between those two things get nasty, but I'm with you in being glad I don't do tanker...
We used to have a military surplus water tank truck of about 1950 vintage for our local volunteer fire department, stopping the truck was interesting. One of my co-workers described it as "the truck would stop, then about two seconds later all the water would stop."
Just to muddy the waters even more, a 16V 4BT would make about the same HP as the 6.2 but with a lot more torque. It would be an easier fit and wouldn't weigh the truck down like the 6BT.
Me personally, I have plenty to do so I think I'd look for a 6.5, nothing wrong with the motor and an easy...
It cranks!
I pulled the spark plugs, cap&wires to do a compression test, dropped in a couple batteries and found enough of the controls work to crank the motor and also run some of the lights. Plenty of work to do on the electrical it looks like though.
Also, I left the banjo bolt loose on the...
Well, I did finally get the fuel lines cleaned out and reinstalled, along with the selector and fuel filter assembly. The tank has a little crud in it, but not too bad really. So I figured I'd best look into the Solex. I pulled off the cover and everything looked fine, including the inlet...
If you don't mind a serious basket case project but perhaps with parts to put it back together, Marcel in Baker,CA might have something.
When he's feeling poor and needs to pay bills things get cheap, so it's a crapshoot. PM me for contact info.
It fits! I bought the truck not knowing then length of the bed less the length of the ramps. I figured it was going to be close and worst-case I could chop a little off the ends of the ramps. The APC is a half-foot longer so turns out it's just about perfect.
Just a bare hull, but it's a...
Oh, Ferrets and their fuel systems!
Knowing they are known to be troublesome I decided to have a go at making sure it was serviced and cleaned out as well as I could without getting too crazy. First was the tank selector, then the fuel filter housing (which turned out to not have a filter in...
When we unloaded the ferret, it didn't roll well at all and I naturally feared the worst. So it was a great relief when I lifted the front after removing the forward driveshafts and found one wheel wouldn't turn and further investigation showed it was an issue with brakes rather than a tracta...
Arrived!
I'm struck by just how small and easy these are to work on when you're accustomed to the CVR(T).
Anyway, had to yank off the turret to restore to a Mk1.
And then scrape off the loose bits and give it a bath. I know putting the spare on will make it harder to work on, just wanted...
The recovery:
I bought the truck about 1000 miles away, perhaps not the smartest move but if I were smart I wouldn't be doing half the things I do.
The flight went well, though at security the TSA were rather perplexed by my positive-pressure hood and blower. I know I got a lot of looks and I'm...
I got the air cleaner, the left hatch, and a pile of seat parts and such. I'm looking forward to confirming the CAR number and sorting out the bits I have (and don't have).
At 5-9 I'm still in the realm of folks who fit the Ferret and CVR(T), just thought I'd see how you found it. I'm pretty concerned about visibility and am considering if it's better to just bee looking around all the time or if I should rig up some video displays for safety when I don't have a...
My pleasure, there's a few more "as found" shots at the end here.
I had read just enough to know some of the bins were not the easiest to come by but will take some time after the initial clean-out to figure what was supposed to go where. I also have what might be a correct stove in the pile...
I'm sure it would be easy in the UK, as there are still a lot of Ferrets stripped of all the common parts and just things nobody ever needs like the quadrant left behind. :-\
I did get the sand channels, I also got two additional tires(plus spare), two complete sets of periscopes, and a tripod...
Thanks, it will never be nearly as clean as yours I fear. Thanks VERY much for all that information. Once I verify the registration I can start looking for history on it. It is missing some things but also has several of the harder to find small bins and such, also the exterior bins are...
Thanks to: https://captainstevens.com/military/mv/ferret-scout-car/ferret-numbers/ I now know how to decode the tag for this Ferret.
Hull 334, built April 1954. I still have no clue if this originally fitted a turret, is the thick or thin hull, or what the decal numbers on the front might...
