It might have something to do with that little metal tab that the key switch moves. My dad was saying that on his 83 Chevy that, that tab would start to wear out and It wouldn't put the link all the way an it sounds tell the starter selanoide in gauge. So that might be adding to your problem or...

Thanks everyone for the help. I checked all the u joints back in the fall and everyone was in working order. I also have a question about the lock in hubs. 1: why do they stick out so far? 2: how do the work? Thanks

OK. Thank you. Ya I had it 4x4 earlier and it doesn't turn around to good on dry pavement. When I had my truck at the tractor pull I locked in the hubs and used 4x4 low and when I turned around with was a tight turn the front end jumped around on the dirt because it was trying to pull so hard.
