I run mostly used ATF, sometimes straight, and sometimes mixed with offroad diesel or old boat gas.

Also, when you bleed em, you have to start at the airpack ,then the farthest rear axle and work up to the front , these trucks have dot 5 silicone fluid in em from the military, sprucemtsurplus.com has this fliud in 1 gallon cans for thirty bucks.

Probably just the seal in the keyway is bad, Which has now washed the grease out of the bearings, Repack the bearings and seal the keyway before you go to far with it!
