I would replace the balancer befor even thinking of starting the engine again. Do not use starter fluid. It is ok to have both isolated ground generators as long as you use a strap to ground the the forward battery gen.

mcmaster.com sells EDPM cord which I believe is the same as the super rope and the following part number is for some neat hooks you can use with it. Look carefully at the drawing for these hooks. These are super simple and galvsnized. 3937T22
