It is a "failsafe" system, so if you unplug the temp switch (ether wire) the fan should run, if not it is likely the TDM. The temp switch turns OFF the fan when the contacts are closed.

Changing to new half shafts made no difference in the popping, they were not changed for that reason but just the same. In my case the popping is from the rear, which makes sense as the front diff. is not forced into as much "differential" action when making a turn as the rear.

Get a laser temp gun and shoot the thermostat housing, it is unlikely the spacing (depth of the sending unit) has any real effect.

Pull one of the wires going to a glow plug and put a volt meter on it, when the run switch is first switched on (engine cold) there should be 24V there for oh 8 seconds or so, then depending on what EESS box you have it will ether start to pulse the 24V or the voltage will be reduced...
