Laser accuracy is very good and to me that is worth a lot. My last fabrication project was all stainless steel mostly 0.25 inch thick had a lot of weldments with keying features for welding assembly and rectangular tubing with bushed pass throughs for pivots etc. I spoke with the fab shop owner...
If you make that as a casting, the tooling cost will be too high even in China. I haven't tooled anything that size, but about half as large with similar complexity was north of $10k with a piece price of around $10 using ADC 6 or 12.
Your best bet is to fabricate that as a weldment. Depending...
I got a text from James yesterday. He was still in Oregon doing PM's. He said the truck is in good shape and drives good. Unfortunately it only goes 54 mph so it looks like a slow trip back.
Maybe he will check in with some pictures soon.
Before you do anything make sure the alternators on the truck are isolated ground. The passenger side has to be. Originally, both were isolated ground. If you have the original alternators on the truck, don't exchange them as a core if you buy a new one. They are not available any more and you...
Just drive it back the way it is James. It's cooler if you take the northern route back. I-80 is a good rood. Head south when you get east of the Mississippi. You could start south a little sooner if you like, just make sure you avoid LA and MS, the roads there are pretty bad. I about beat...
The left alternator in your second picture is also a 27SI series. The SRE is just different. It's probably the 24 volt version as shown in this picture.
It's a resistor. As noted above, some alternators have them, some don't. Here's a link to my alternator rebuild thread so you can see the insulators that are used in an isolated ground alternator.

The alternator is very easy to rebuild. If you decide you need to rebuild your alternator, I have the kits for sale. If you buy another alternator, make sure you keep your old one. They are not available anymore and you may need it for parts (rear casting).
There is a link to my classified ad...
An isolated ground alternator will have two insulated outputs on the back. One red for B+ and one black for B-. On the stock alternator there's also a second post terminal that accepts a push on connector. Sometimes there is also a case ground bolt.
If the alternator you bought only has a...
