I am getting ready to start do some body work. More and more hidden corners show that the original color was OD # 24087.
The first repaint job was probably done in 1973, in a darker green, probably the # 34079 Forest Green.
Maybe here you see the original OD with the faded forest...
Just take everything apart and start rebuild it, looks like a nice project. A transmission for $ 275 even not perfect does not sound bad, but then, I am used to crazy European prizes.
Not really, I had a problem with the M51A2 steering as well. In the end, I combined two old steering gear boxes to get the stuff back to work.

I think I will just re-install the rear output shaft between the PTO and the pump, but leave the link between control box and rear shifter staff out (not connected). Then start the engine, with everything in neutral, and let Soldier B push the the rear shifter shaft into "engage" to ge tthe pump...

I had all shafts disconnected from the PTO and the engine running. And yes, off course it works how it should. Don't know where I got the idea from that the winch lever also operated the dump. Probably because the PTO is dual, and the winch shifter and the rear shifter shaft are...
Which still leaves the question which positions the PTO control lever has in the dump. By feeling in my 1965 M51A2 (overhauled completely in 1973), it feels like only three:
Forward down: rear output shaft turning
Neutral: standing about 60 degrees up, the lever can be locked in this position...
Maybe they have the dual PTO to drive a pump for the water at the middle or the back of the truck. My M51 (5-ton) has a dual and I am now fighting with it.

Presumably the hood number follows the truck throughout its life, but both CARNAC and Dave Doyle mention that keeping track left something to be desired.
