As stated, remove the top cover from the gearbox and inspect. the gearshift extension into the box might be worn and slipped out of position. This can cause that. Ive seen it happen. If the shifter is worn, let me know, I have extras.

You have a second major hurdle; exporting from France is not so easy, either. It is NOT the UK. The is a lot of paperwork that needs signed by the right person on the right day. France can be a real problem.
