Spacers between engine/trans cooler and radiator

It's hard to say that coolant temperature has much effect on efficiency. The cycle is nearly adiabatic so outside temps have little effect on anything. Higher coolant temps do reduce cylinder wear rates and prevent cylinder glazing. I am going to have to provide some documentation to back this...

    30k reliability

You program the VFD to the motor so your 1.5 HP motor could be damaged if the VFD tries to run it as a 20 HP motor. The VFD also does some condition monitoring and may trip if it sees the motor circuit open as the relays change over. You could probably disable this.

Spacers between engine/trans cooler and radiator

Is central VA Middle East hot? The HMMWV earned it's reputation in the hottest desert.

M1007 - CUCV Suburban Clone Build Thread

Coolant recovery is surprisingly unimportant. When the system is at its hottest, the system will be full. We know this from off-road motorcycles. Of course, who wants to waste coolant finding a that perfect level.

    30k reliability

In my industry we generally find it less expensive to fly in labor because the hotel cost is less than paying travel time each day for the local labor.

    Hmmwv reliability

The engine, transmission, and transfer case are the most reliable parts of the HMMWV. It's everything attached to those components that fails.

    Two silly oil change questions...

This has been a problem for a very long time. https://www.sae.org/publications/technical-papers/content/250031/

    Two silly oil change questions...

That really depends on your oil cooler type. With an air to oil cooler, the oil will not get to an adequate temperature while idling to remove condensation from the crankcase. Without an oil cooler the same is likely true. With an oil to water cooler you can get your oil hot enough while idling...

    Two silly oil change questions...

Don't do it. The oil is in the pan, away from the heat generating parts of the engine. If you're just idling it, the oil doesn't get hot and accumulates moisture. The only reason to start a vehicle regularly is to keep the battery charged. Better to do this with a battery charger. Engines with...

    Two silly oil change questions...

Wet stacking isn't the problem here. That's mostly a generator issue where they run full speed no load. Condensation is the problem. Every pound of diesel burned produces a pound of water. Exhaust has tons of water in it and any blow-by into the crankcase results in condensation. If the oil...

Spacers between engine/trans cooler and radiator

Often, oil and trans coolers spend most of their time working as heaters. The help normalize the oil and trans temps with the engine coolant. Probably best to leave it in contact with the radiator.

    Two silly oil change questions...

Everybody, you do regular oil changes so that your oil never becomes so contaminated that it becomes harmful to your engine. That means that any residual oil left behind during an oil change will not harm your engine. Don't worry about it. As for ATF, your automatic transmission doesn't have...

Automatic Voltage Regulator. It drives the field current on the generator. This is an example of a cheap one. This one will have limited boost for starting big motors. https://www.genpowerusa.com/automatic-voltage-regulators/marathon-se350-voltage-regulator-avr/ Here is an example of a more...

    30k reliability

DOL is direct on line. That refers to starting a motor with a magnetic contactor or switch. A 15 horsepower electric motor is going to draw 60 horsepower during a DOL start. The overload duration is short so thermally the generator can handle it. But generator rotating assembly needs to have...

    30k reliability

Sizing a generator is fairly straightforward. The nameplate rating needs exceed the sum of all of your loads. AND The nameplate rating must be at least double the largest motor rating for DOL starting. Pick the largest of the two numbers. However, with a VFD the generator nameplate and...

    30k reliability

You shouldn't direct on line start a 15 HP motor on a 30kW generator set. The generator won't be able to maintain the pull up voltage on the contactor which will cause it to chatter. This will burn out the contacts within a few starts. Regardless of motor phase you're still going to need a VFD...

    30k reliability

15hp 1phase motors are $6000. The same power in 3 phase is $1200. I don't know about wood applications but single phase motors in metal working applications don't produce good surface finish because the shaft speed isn't constant over a revolution.

Oh and mount as much of the controls off of the engine as possible, especially fuses and circuit breakers as they don't tolerate vibration.

    30k reliability

Reliable? Keep it simple. I see the military units on here and they're way too complicated. I operate a fleet of 99kW-125kW generator sets. I've got 18 at the moment. I just replaced all of the generator sets as they had up to 35k hours on them. You want a John Deere 4045 engine, Marathon or...
