The new and improved head gasket has separate fire rings. The difference is in the vent channel around the fire ring. It allows any oil or coolant to NOT enter the cylinder and blow the gasket, it also pervents a blown ring from taking out the adajacent cylinder. At least this is what...
I will try to detail the test and adjustment (please excuse the errors it has been 20+ years since I did this last...)
Place truck on a reasonably level place, chock rears.
Engine should not be running for this test.
Jack up a front wheel, stay clear just in case there is some wind-up in the...
G744 has the test right on, jack it up and turn the wheels. Only difference is that the GMC does not use an over-run clutch (sprag or roller), it has a dog clutch, which almost never gives any trouble (unlike the clutch in the M-35s) other than adjustment. The adjustment is REALLY critical...
Guys,
That looks like a commecial 3 piece wheel. NOT a mil. std. split rim (2 piece wheel) The commercial multipiece wheels are the killers, AVOID at all cost.
Look for a military split rim wheel.
Good catch on the Dexron, even Chevron that produces the stuff spells it wrong on the official web site. (But they get it correct in the spec sheet....)
BTW, you do not change the torus usage, just the utilization of the stator, the fluid clutch (torque converter) on these trucks has virtually...
Karl,
Do not have my XM211 any longer, but, they are GREAT trucks and just plain superior to the M35.
Regarding the tranny. 2/3 shift in high or low will always be abrupt, IF you just hammer the throttle. Has to do with the complexity of the shift, going from one gear pack and one band to the...
Bjorn,
This is a great question, hopefully we will get some response. I have just (Friday) spent all day in brake testing of a commercial 18 wheeler. Even with unacceptable trailer brakes the tractor still provided sufficient stopping power to give the accepted standard of 0.5G and this at...
Ryan,
The installed bow assembly is 60" from bed to top of bow.
The original staves were red oak.
One variation was a shorter stave (roughly 36") with a metal block, secured with the same kind of screws that hold the corners on, that limited the depth into the sideboard. These are much easier...
What input seal, that is a novel idea....
My guess is that the rear crank seal is the problem, is the leak gear oil or engine oil? (Jet black or some other color?)
THe 4th sychro is not uncommon to fail. Removal of the transmission is a bear, just plain HEAVY.
OR
Do you know how to drive a...
The 2-1/2 t transfers came as mechanical with a sprag drive for the front axle or as "air" shifted, or just manual engagement of front axle. All the 5t (M-39, M-800) had air shifted front axles with sprag drives.
There are arguments on both sides for the 2-1/2t transfers, the sprags were...
Well, from another guy that has had both 2-1/2 tonners and 5-tonners, asnd many years of time in U.S. MV's of other kinds....
All the before comments regarding the 2-1/2's vs 5 t's are applicable. Especially the part about the 5t's being just plain big trucks. (Yes ten lugs at 450 Ft-lb and...
Most likely Saturday, most MVers have to work to feed the hobby.
Do you want to ride down with us, we will be going through Atlanta at approximately noon on Friday, current schedule and heading out I-20, have a pick-up just beyond Conyers for another participant.
Squirt Truck
Come on guys, this is a new event here in the southeast, we are trying to get a group to travel together from the Atlanta area, so far three trucks, one with big trailer hauling smaller trucks, and possibly another if his schedule works.
Bjorn, we can have more of the heat loss conversation...
Bjorn,
You are a numbers guy, lets look at the math here. At one gallon per hour, that is 139,000 BTU's/Hr. With the flow through the engine and the rise in temp of the air, still leaves a BUNCH of heat to be dissipated by the oil (not much going there at idle) and through the walls of the...
Bjorn,
You keep making reference to running either the winter cover or your plywood cover for the radiator. Also, the reference to the engine temperature being poorly if not uncontrolled, especially the fact that your engine will not warm up or will cool below "normal" operating temperature...
Thanks for the info.
The genset has fresh gas and a clean tank. The plugs are clean and gapped. This little brat actually runs smoother with the 1/2 plugs or the 3/4 plugs grounded, it is when all four are in operation that it is so rough and spits and coughs. Makes good power but geeeeeeee...
If it is from a 5-ton, the gas engine and the multi-fuels used the same transmisison, (6352), the Mack and Cummins used the OD transmission (6453). The OD is 0.78:1. Both are Spicers.
The direct transmission is the working unit, the gear ratios are better spaced, the OD gives better road speed...
First question, the difference in a roller clutch and a sprag. The operation is the same, a stepless over-running clutch (read this as a one way clutch). A roller clutch uses spring pre-loaded rollers that climb small ramps to wedge themselves into the outer race. a sprag uses small hour glass...
