They are far from total junk, they may be older, but they can still do a lot of work. They are primitive, but very functional. Smooth 6 cylinder power, slow and steady as she goes. A great truck in its time, still a great truck, easy to work on and really dependable.
I added line wrenches and a 1/4" drive socket set for the lift pump repair. 3/8" drive socket set under the seat, old OD green canvas mechanic's bag behind the seat with a wide assortment of combination wrenches, screw drivers.... Tossing in a multi-meter next... I am going to have to slow down...
That view looks more like a U-joint broke and the yoke was not up to the next strike. Depending upon on the speed that they fail at, they can have tremendous energy.
Yes, you will want your replacement to be ready when you remove that yoke at the T-case. I agree, it looks like they were horribly dry, but I have broken many U-joints over the years and without huge power, the yokes never snapped. Its a different story when you dump 800 foot pounds on a set of...
Looks like a solid truck! Hopefully that was a joint failure and not a fork lift crush. They tend to break transfer cases and the adapters between the transmission and transfer case with forklift abuse. The tube does not look kinked, so lets hope for a yoke or two and a replacement shaft to fix...
You probably need a new filter base. I bought a couple on Ebay, but if I had it to do over, I would just convert to spin on filters. Less mess, better filter, less hassle. The topic has been hit several times over. Glen
I would still prefer to charge them one at a time on 12 volts. I missed that you had a 24 volt charger, my fault... If one battery is really low or bad, you will really smoke the good one trying to recover the bad or low battery. I would also recommend pulling the front battery ground if...
I normally pull the cable between the batteries and charge them one at a time. They are in series to make 24 volts, not parallel. If they were set up to charge both at the same time on 12 volts, we would only need one 12V alternator.
I spent good money on the SF97 and then found out I could have got by without it in Kansas. Just needed the government release, bill of sale and the inspection. Chalk me up for another 60 days waiting and 70 bucks blown.....
Even though they are two wheel drive and short, I think they weigh really close to 8,000 pounds. It would be a pushy little slug behind your truck on a tow bar. I think even a one ton truck would be better off with a trailer and trailer brakes. Neat little package though, put some good traction...
Did you ever find a starter? I think I have one in my garage, if you still need one, I will check. It is yours for the cost of shipping as I have no need for it here. Glen
